Weekly Roundup Time … How I Broke My Leg … Spending The Week With My Family … & Christmas Day …

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetHey everyone … so welcome to another weekly roundup … you all know how last week ended with me and a broken leg making our way back to Dubai … but I realise that between the vague details in my last weekly roundup and other posts during this week and the few things I’ve posted on facebook not many people know the full story of what happened and how I got injured … as such there have been some rather dramatic stories flying around amongst my family where some details have been lost or misunderstood along the way … so I thought I’d take this opportunity to explain what happened and to allay any fears that it was anything more serious than it was …

That is not to say the situation wasn’t serious or that the injury wasn’t painful … but it wasn’t as bad as some thought it was …

20141217_095009-1So I’ll start from the beginning … on our last full day we headed out to explore some of the sights of South Iceland … as it was due to be quite windy and cold Agust our guide lent me an all in one Thermal Suit to go over my clothes … it was quite large on me but the smaller sizes would have been too short …

_MG_0599-1Anyway one of the places we stopped at was a black sand beach (which Iceland is famous for) that had some interesting rock outcrops … and great stormy waves to photograph … as it so happens the whole incident was photographed by myself, Perry and Agust … at the different stages … so the above photo is the one I took of the wave that got me … as soon as I took the picture I realised I was in trouble and ran … the following two were taken by Perry …

From this last one above you can tell I was never going to get away from the wave fast enough … then the next couple photos were taken by Agust … in fairness at first he thought I had just got caught out and was laughing at the situation … it took a couple seconds for it to sink in that I was screaming and not laughing then he ran straight over and helped Perry get me up the beach above the tide line …

Anyway it was excruciating … and even though I was soaked from the waist down I barely felt the cold at all … Perry was worried I was going into shock and eventually with the two of them they helped me get out of the thermal onsie … wrapped in a sleeping bag and bundled into the car …

My first priority when I realised I was going to get wet was to hold up my camera so it wouldn’t get damaged … the fact that Perry was near me at the time was very fortunate as … he too at first didn’t realise I’d hurt myself … but when he grabbed the camera he also was able to stop the receding wave from dragging me back towards the sea any further as the strap was wrapped around my neck and under one arm …

It took around 3 hours to get to the nearest hospital … that is how remote we were and Iceland is in general … we had to pass the guesthouse on our way to the hospital anyway so I asked if we could stop there so Perry could get me some dry clothes to change into … in the end Agust and Perry had to change their shoes and trousers too cause they had gotten wet helping me …

20141217_180205-1Finally got to the hospital and I think it was at this point while we were waiting for the Dr to see me that I really realised how lucky I was that things didn’t turn out worse than they did … I was lucky that Perry was right beside me … we were lucky that Agust was with us and knew what to do/where to go when it happened … and after I saw the Dr I felt even more lucky that injury hadn’t been much worse …

So after seeing the Dr it turned out I had broken my Fibula … just above my ankle … so this will not have an effect on my joint and I wont suffer from arthritis because of this injury (doesn’t mean I wont get it but it wont be because of this) …

As the specialist Orthopaedic Dr was in Surgery the Dr I saw couldn’t ask him about my injury but suspected I may have needed surgery … as we already had our flights booked to go back to Dubai as well it was decided it would be best to have any surgical stuff done back there where I could go see the same Dr for all my followups …

So they bandaged me up in a backslab cast … which basically means the plaster of paris, or the hard part of the cast is on the underside of my foot and back of my leg … and everything is held together with bandages … this means there is enough flexibility in the cast to account for any swelling that may occur during the flights we had to get back to Dubai …

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetThis is what it looked like when we were leaving the next morning … big fat fluffy snow flakes … I have to say the one thing we didn’t get to do that I was upset about was going to the Blue Lagoon … it had been our plan to go that morning before our flight back to London … but broken leg meant it was off the cards … I guess we now have a reason to go back …

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetWe got to Heathrow fine … although their wheelchairs are the kind where someone has to push you … so we ended up doing a weird convoy type thing where Perry pushed me and I pushed the trolley with our bags …

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetWe spent the night at my Auntie Lida’s house in London before heading back to the airport the next morning for our ongoing flight to Dubai … My family at the time were in Iran on the first part of their holiday … but I was in constant contact with my Brother via Whatsapp but we thought it would be best to tell my parents as little as possible about my leg until they got to Dubai and I could explain everything myself in person and so that they would be able to see that I was ok … otherwise all they would end up doing is be sitting around worrying over it and it would just ruin their trip … knowing all the details was not necessary at the time … plus it would have been difficult to explain over the phone as the connections are never all that great anyway …

We finally got to Dubai around 12.30am on Saturday morning … and by the time we got home and got ready for bed my foot swelled up massively … my foot and leg were going numb … I could see my toes was swollen up … and it was all really painful too … so Perry took me to the hospital A&E to be safe … I’d had an appointment to see the specialist in the morning anyway but I decided it couldn’t wait and I was in too much pain …

So by the time we got to the hospital it was 3am … I was seen by the emergency Dr who said it was likely I’d need surgery and they admitted me there and then … by the time they took me to my room it was almost 6am and I just tried to sleep as much as I could while Perry slept on the sofa …

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetIn the morning the specialist came to see me and it was decided that I needed surgery to ensure the bone healed correctly …

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetMarking up my very bruised leg for surgery …

it ended up happening later that same afternoon and rather than putting me under a general anaesthetic I was given a spinal anaesthetic … or an epidural … as its better for the recovery … so I was awake for the whole thing although they did put a screen up so I couldn’t see what was going on … but it was interesting speaking to my surgeons as they were drilling screws into my leg …

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetThere again I felt quite lucky that it was a straight forward surgery … that I had Dr’s I trusted and frankly that it was my left leg … cause I can still drive with my right leg … in the end I had a metal plate put in with 5 screws … and was told it will probably take up to 6 weeks for the break to heal completely …

All in all I spent a little less than 48hrs in hospital and Perry delayed going back to work by a day to make sure I was ok at home … he even went and got me a wheelchair cause I am not allowed to put any weight on my left leg for the next 6 weeks and hobbling around on crutches is both very slow and quite painful after a while …

Then on Monday my family arrived from Iran and I was glad I could finally explain everything that had happened to my parents properly so they could be relaxed in knowing that I was ok and that my leg would be fine eventually … its just one of those things that will take time but will get better …

Other than that on Tuesday we headed to Dubai Mall and went up the Burj Khalifa and yesterday we had a relaxed day around the marina … I spent most of it resting up my leg … and my family headed down to the beach for a bit to soak up some sun and enjoy the waves …

Today we are off to the Atlantis for Christmas Day Brunch … with the family … I’ll be setup at the table and will spend the day ordering people around to get me food … just kidding I’ll be asking nicely 🙂

Anyway wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays … hope you are all having a lovely and relaxing day if you are celebrating and enjoy the long weekend …

That is it for this post … sorry its been a long one but I figured after all the misunderstanding about what actually happened it was worth taking the time to explain it all properly …

Till next time …
