The Land Of Ice & Snow … South Coast Driving & Ice Beach … Iceland Trip – Part 3 …

_MG_8657-1Hey everyone … so I’m back home today thankfully … leg is still really sore and can be very painful if the pain killers wear off … but anyway this week I am skipping the Monday Links in place of another Iceland post … I kind of want to get these done and posted before Christmas if possible …

Anyway so the Monday we were in Iceland ended up actually being our big adventure type day … we left at a really early hour in the morning … we left around 7.30am and it was still pitch black outside … after a couple hours it started to get a little lighter but it wasn’t until gone 10.30am that it was bright enough to take any pictures …

_MG_8258-1 _MG_8205-1We headed off towards the East side of Iceland travelling along the South Coast …

_MG_8209-1 _MG_8227-1 _MG_8219-1 _MG_8232-1 _MG_8240-1We stopped at this waterfall on our way … I don’t remember if it had a name or not but it was really pretty with all the icicles all over it too …

We were soon back on the road and enjoying the ever wonderful sunrise as we were on our way … passing semi frozen rivers and beautiful landscapes on our way …

One advantage of having a photo enthusiast as your guide is they appreciate stopping for a good photo opportunity …

These snow drifts are just incredible … and Ester (one of the other guests staying at the same guest house as us) below just had to get closer …

More semi frozen rivers …

Can you see the Polar Bear shape in the picture above??? … the picture above and below show part of the Vatnajökull Glacier (don’t ask me how to pronounce it) … and its actually the largest glacier in Europe and covers around 10-11% of Iceland’s land … pretty huge really …

You can see the bright blue of the Glacier Ice better in the picture below …

_MG_8432-1The roads were super icy that day too … made for some rather precarious driving at times … but Agust (our guide) was great at handling it all …

_MG_8456-1 _MG_8460-1 _MG_8539-1We just couldn’t get enough of the snow drifts …

_MG_8531-1

Honestly it looks like the houses are up in the clouds it was so etherial …

_MG_8567-1 _MG_8558-1As for where we were ultimately heading … we were supposed to be going to see the Ice Caves at a particular spot by the Vatnajökull glacier, and the meeting point was by this Glacier Lagoon … at one part of the Glacier where the Ice tongue is … as pieces of the ice break off they float down into this large Lagoon where they happily float around for a while … and it’s been one of the main things I have wanted to see on this trip other than the Northern Lights …

_MG_8573-1You can see the end of the Glacier off in the distance and the lagoon towards the front of the picture above … but what happens to the Ice after its gone into the lagoon??? well it eventually carries on out to sea … where the waves wash the massive lumps of ice up onto the black sand beaches …

_MG_8600-1So as we had some time we got out here for a bit to take some photos …

_MG_8619-1 _MG_8625-1

If you couldn’t tell from my getup it was really really cold … as in it was -10C all day and occasionally there were crazy insane gusts of up to 50mph that lasted from 10-30secs … but I learn’t my lesson and was wearing about as many layers as I could get on while still having full use of my limbs … in the picture above I’m actually wearing 2 scarf’s, 2 coats, 2 jumpers and 2 trousers … literally doubled up on everything … and it did work pretty well in the end …

_MG_8626-1 _MG_8635-1

Some of those crazy gusts I was telling you about before … all you can do is turn your back to it, brace yourself so you don’t fall over and wait it out …

_MG_8637-1 _MG_8648-1 _MG_8657-1

The lumps of ice ranged in size … but a lot of them were massive … as in almost as big as me or Perry …

_MG_8664-1 _MG_8688-1 _MG_8690-1 _MG_8661-1 _MG_8668-1 _MG_8706-1 _MG_8679-1 _MG_8696-1They were just so pretty … I could have stayed there all day … but Perry was over getting battered by the wind and headed back to the car while I took a few more photos …

_MG_8743-1 _MG_8729-1 _MG_8747-1 _MG_8756-1 _MG_8752-1

The contrast of the Black Sand beach with the snow is really lovely …

_MG_8768-1 _MG_8759-1

That would be Agust our guide off in the distance also taking pictures …

_MG_8757-1 _MG_8763-1By the way we got to this beach around 1.30pm … this is about as high as the sun goes during the day and the light is is like the perfect golden hour style of lighting … its just brilliant …

Anyway that is it for this post … I’ll be back tomorrow with more pictures from the Glacier Lagoon and to explain what happened when we tried to go to the Ice Caves …

Till next time …

Mina X
