South Africa – Walking with the Cheetah’s …

_MG_1391-1Hey everyone … one of the best things we did while we were staying at the Safari Lodge was to do an early morning walk with the Cheetahs … it was a lot of fun tracking them down on foot and finally finding them … they are tolerant to humans being around and close to them but obviously we still need to keep our distance cause they are still wild animals and not pets …

Due to a really bad period of drought a few years ago the Lodge had to change the way they manage the animals on the part of the Nature Reserve that they are responsible for looking after … the Cheetah’s have to be kept separated from the Lions as otherwise the Lions would likely kill them … this is why they are kept in a separated part of the park …

_MG_1323-1 _MG_1364-1We started out really early in the morning and got to watch the sunrise as we made our way to the area where the Cheetahs live …

_MG_1372-1 _MG_1378-1 _MG_1381-1Their area is so large we had trouble finding them when we did our first game drive the day before … and it was only after trekking around the enclosure on foot for over 30mins using the radio tracker before we (and by we I mean Perry) spotted them lounging under a tree in the distance …

They are both males called Batman and Robin … Batman is the one on the left in the pictures above and Robin on the right … Batman looks a bit like Derek when he’s rolled on to his back like that … just big kittens really …

_MG_1391-1 _MG_1398-1 _MG_1400-1After they spotted us they got up to go for a stroll … Our Ranger Sarah told us that they had probably recently eaten as their bellies were full and rounded …

_MG_1422-1_MG_1412-1 _MG_1420-1We followed them around for a bit keeping our distance and letting them take the lead on where we went …

_MG_1423-1 _MG_1437-1 _MG_1441-1 _MG_1448-1Some stretching going on …

_MG_1452-1 _MG_1453-1 _MG_1455-1 _MG_1462-1They finally decided to get onto the dirt road carved out by the Game Vehicles … this was better for me especially as walking through the brush was difficult for me due to the uneven footing and my track record with twisting my ankles …

_MG_1466-1 _MG_1468-1 _MG_1472-1 _MG_1478-1We followed them along until they decided to get comfy under a different tree …

_MG_1482-1 _MG_1499-1 _MG_1486-1 _MG_1501-1They looked like they weren’t planning on going anywhere anytime soon so after taking a few more pictures we decided to leave them to it and head back to our car …

_MG_1504-1 _MG_1508-1We didn’t realise quite how far we had gotten from the car until we started making our way back … (can you see it in the picture above off in the distance) …

_MG_1513-1 _MG_1519-1 _MG_1525-1 _MG_1536-1We made our way back to the lodge to refresh ourselves a bit before getting ready to head out again for the morning Game Drive …

_MG_1563-1 _MG_1540-1I have to say this was one of those things I was really looking forward to doing on this trip and it was a great experience …

I’ll be back again later with details of what we got up to on our Game Drives …

Till next time …
