South Africa – Morning at Rietfontein Ostrich Palace & A Visit to the Ostrich Farm …

_MG_0175-1Right so picking up where we left off … after spending the night at the RIETFONTEIN OSTRICH PALACE … we spent some time the next morning playing with their dogs and wandering the gardens …

_MG_0060-1 _MG_0067-1 _MG_0085-1Honestly that little Jack Russel had so much energy … kept jumping on the Lab and trying to get her to play …

_MG_0094-1 _MG_0111-1 _MG_0114-1 _MG_0118-1 _MG_0123-1 _MG_0134-1He especially loved to grab her by the tail …

_MG_0152-1 _MG_0155-1We then went for a little wander around the grounds of the place … they have a lovely garden … a pool which would be lovely in the summer and some incredible views …

_MG_0160-1 _MG_0175-1 _MG_0187-1 _MG_0194-1Honestly it looked like such an idyllic place …

_MG_0208-1 _MG_0218-1

Could have stared at the view all day …

_MG_0216-1 _MG_0227-1We headed back to the main house and the owner of the farm took us out on a tour of the Ostrich Farm they owned … he told us the place had been in his family since the mid 1800’s and he had spent his whole life there as well …

_MG_0242-1

We learnt all about how the farmers breed the Ostrich … how easy it is to loose a whole group of babies if they are not looked after properly …

_MG_0252-1 _MG_0254-1He also explained how difficult it has become to farm Ostrich since the Bird Flu outbreak a few years ago … the new regulations for farming poultry is very restrictive for Ostrich’s considering how much bigger they are … some of the new rules just doesn’t make sense when applied to Ostrich farming which has made it much more difficult for those who are still trying to make a living from it …

_MG_0263-1 _MG_0268-1 _MG_0275-1There used to be over a 1000 Ostrich farms in the area and since the Bird Flu outbreak this has since dropped to around 100 …

_MG_0278-1

_MG_0284-1We learnt how to tell the difference between the male and females and all the different steps the animals go through before they are mature …

_MG_0293-1 _MG_0305-1 _MG_0328-1

It was a very interesting experience and we both learnt alot about the Ostrich that we didn’t know beforehand … it was very informative and if you ever have the chance to visit an Ostrich farm I would highly recommend it …

_MG_0331-1 _MG_0334-1Back at the farmhouse we finished loading up our stuff into the car and settled up before leaving … although I have to say these two little guys made it so hard for us to leave …

_MG_0345-1 _MG_0338-1I mean look at those faces!!!

It was sad to leave this place and honestly I would have loved to have stayed another day to just relax … do nothing and just stare at that view for a few hours … but we had to keep going to get to Port Elizabeth … but that is for the next post …

Anyway that is it for this post …

Till next time …
