South Africa – Cape Town … African Penguin Colony …

Penguin Beach Pano 1Hey everyone … so I’m back again with some more stuff from our South Africa trip … this is the final part of our day traveling around the Cape … you can see PART 1 and PART 2 by clicking the links … as you can probably tell by the title of this post and the photo above … we went to see the African Penguins near Simon’s Town …

It was probably the thing I was most looking forward to doing that day … I was stupidly excited about the penguins … and I think Perry found it amusing to see me all goofy about it too … he also thought they were pretty darn cute …

They are just the cutest little waddles …

They actually have a pretty good set up on the beach … there is a visitors centre right by the entrance which has a lot of good information about the Penguins and some history about the colony on this beach … these Penguins are classified as endangered and the colony on this beach started with just 2 breeding pairs of Penguins in 1982 and has grown to over 2,000 since then … the area is protected and the Penguins are free to roam around where they want … with elevated walk ways for people to go along so as to avoid disturbing the Penguins …

Off for a swim …

_MG_9269-1 _MG_9273-1Little baby fluffies …

_MG_9280-1 _MG_9307-1 _MG_9315-1I referred to these guys as the Three Amigos … they were just waddling along together on this rock …

_MG_9320-1 _MG_9324-1Hoping across the crack …

_MG_9329-1 _MG_9334-1Before a wave came along … caught them off balance and swept them into the water …

_MG_9337-1 _MG_9339-1 _MG_9343-1They swam the short distance back to the beach and waddled off like nothing happened … they are just so adorable …

_MG_9351-1 _MG_9355-1Through the more wooded/protected area of the beach is where most of the penguins have set up their nests …

_MG_9359-1 _MG_9383-1 _MG_9376-1This little guy above is collecting leaves for his nest …

_MG_9385-1 _MG_9387-1View from the otherside of the beach … its nice to see the humans effectively ‘caged’ in with restricted access and the animals able to have the run of the place …

_MG_9388-1 _MG_9396-1Finally I took this panorama before we left … you can click the image to see it larger …

Penguin Beach Pano 1

After the beach we headed back to the car stopping off along the way for a late lunch … we went back to the hotel after and had a rest for the afternoon before going out again for a couple hours in the evening … we had an early night as we were hitting the road early the next morning to start our trip heading East …

But that will be for another post …

Till next time …
