South Africa – Cape Town … Driving Around The Cape …

_MG_8746-1Right … well this is my second post from our trip to South Africa … and on our one full day in Cape Town we spent it travelling around the Cape itself exploring all the different places and views on offer … it was a really fun mini road trip day that was a bit mixed with the weather …

As cold and as windy as it was … we got incredibly lucky with the weather … it was on and off rain all day but we seemed to manage to miss the worst of it … every time we stopped to take pictures the rain stopped and usually the skies opened up a bit and shared some sunshine and slivers of blue sky … and then we’d get caught in another rain shower while driving … only to have it stop again the next time we hopped out to look around and take pictures …

_MG_8546-1Anyway so we started off by driving along the Western side of the Cape … with the aim of driving down to Hout Bay and then taking the Chapman’s Peak Drive (the thicker yellow line in the map above) and stopping in Noordhoek for a coffee and a snack …

_MG_8564-1 _MG_8584-1We first stopped near Camps Bay en-route to Hout Bay to just enjoy the views … the water was pretty choppy with massive waves breaking on the rocks …

_MG_8599-1At one point I noticed a Rock Hyrax on one of the rocks down below where we stood … then every time I looked around another one appeared … after a while there were about 5-6 of them standing on the rocks below staring at us … none of the moved … they just kept appearing and they were all staring at us … it got rather creepy after a while and we decided to get going … although I do think they are cute and fluffy!

We stopped at Hout Bay and parked up near the Mariner’s Wharf … the main reason for stopping here was to find a toilet … but they had a nice little Deli/Bakery/shop where we picked up some snacks and Perry browsed the Antique shop for Navel/Shipping stuff …

_MG_8652-1 _MG_8658-1 _MG_8665-1 _MG_8679-1There were some really brave kids out in the water with their Surf Boards …

_MG_8664-1 _MG_8680-1We finally made a move and carried on along the road heading towards the Chapman’s Peak Drive stopping at this view point on the way …

_MG_8752-1 _MG_8746-1And if you couldn’t tell I thought it was rather windy … although my new jacket kept me nice and warm!

_MG_8765-1 _MG_8766-1 _MG_8769-1 Hout Bay Pano 1We didn’t stay there too long as shortly after we got there a bus load of tourists showed up … so we quickly snapped our pictures before they started getting in the way …

_MG_8769-1 _MG_8776-1 _MG_8778-1

Its a very pretty drive and very scenic along the way down to Noordhoek … there was even a part of the road where it is carved out of the mountain side in a was that the road had a roof of sorts … you can see what I mean by that in the picture below …

_MG_8791-1On the initial approach to Noordhoek you have this amazing view out over the town and the bay with its tidal lagoon …

_MG_8796-1

The thatched houses were so pretty …

_MG_8800-1 _MG_8805-1So the brown muddy looking bit is the lagoon … then there is the sand beach and then the Atlantic Ocean …

_MG_8809-1It was really interesting for me as I hadn’t seen anything like that before …

_MG_8810-1 _MG_8812-1It started raining shortly after we arrived at the Noordhoek Village Farm … so we quickly ran in to take some cover and settled down at one of the little Cafe’s there …

_MG_8813-1 _MG_8815-1

We ordered a couple of Coffee’s to warm up …

_MG_8817-1 _MG_8822-1We also ordered what we thought would be a small snack of scones with jam … what showed up was a scone disguised as an oversized muffin …

_MG_8829-1It was so tasty but also incredibly filling … we could have just had the one between the two of us … we actually kept the left overs and ate the rest later …

_MG_8834-1That is it for this post … I’ll be back later this week with more details of what we got up to later that day …

Till next time …
