Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque … Abu Dhabi …

_MG_3139-1Ok … well this post was meant to have been published weeks ago … but what with how busy everything got in the last 2-3 weeks before our US trip I barely had enough time to sit down and edit the pictures let alone write anything for this post …

Anyway enough of that … while we were in ABU DHABI for the long weekend in May … we also made a trip to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque … this place had been on my to do list since we moved here and I still can’t believe its taken us this long to pay a visit …

We’ve both driven past the mosque and seen it from the road several times but this was our first visit to go inside … its a very modern mosque in its design and construction … it was officially opened in 2007 works are still ongoing …

We got there in time to join one of the free guided tours of mosque … which I would totally recommend … really informative and gives you much better insight into the history and background of the mosque itself …

Some of the facts we picked up on our way round …

  • There are around 1,000 columns throughout the mosque …
  • There are 82 domes and 4 minarets …
  • The construction of the mosque has cost AED 2 billion to date (its still ongoing) …
  • Opened in 2007 …
  • The Main Prayer room holds three world records …
    • Largest dome in a mosque in the world …
    • Largest Chandelier in a mosque in the world …
    • Largest Carpet in the world at over 5,600m2 …

All in all its a pretty impressive building … we will definitely be coming back again … Anyway here are the pictures from our visit … I will warn you there are a lot of them …

The column shown in the picture above houses several lights … these project coloured light onto the mosque in the evenings and the colours range from white to blue to show the different phases of the moon from full moon to the new moon each month …

The doorway / entrance to the main prayer room is pretty and automatically slides open as you get near it …

The carpet is over 5,600m2 and was made by over 1,200 women in Mashad, Iran … weighs 35 tons and had to be flown over on two planes in nine sections …

The building is very well designed … its all Air Conditioned inside … but the conceal the vents well so they are not that obvious …

Before leaving we went to check out the library … it was actually really nice to just sit there and read some of the books on Islamic architecture and other topics on a similar theme …

We headed back to the hotel for the rest of that day … but we had a good couple hours at the mosque and as I mentioned before we will certainly be back again when we have visitors over …

Till next time …
