Other Bits & Pieces From Tehran … Family Time, Parties, Rooftop Views … Tehran, Iran …

_MG_9098-1So here is my final post from Tehran … its a random collection of other bits and pieces of things we got up to and did around all the other stuff … starting with the day we arrived in Tehran …

After we got to my Auntie Nahid’s home from the Airport … Perry and I had some time to relax and catch up with my family who were there … that evening my Aunt had invited round the rest of my Aunties and Cousins who are still in Tehran to come over for dinner … so in the late afternoon my Mum, Perry, Saghi and I headed out to the nearby shopping area Aria Shahr … its pretty close so we just walked it …

We stopped at an Ice Cream shop to have some traditional Ice Cream sandwiches …

_MG_9084-1 _MG_9085-1

I could only get through half of mine so Perry not only ate his whole one but also the second half of mine … if you hadn’t already figured it out he loves ice cream …

There are usually people on the street corners trying to sell stuff … we spotted a few while we were out … including this guy selling baby chicks and ducklings … including some which had been dyed in different colours …

There were also lots of stalls selling other seasonal fruits and edible deliciousness for which I do not know the English translations …

_MG_9098-1

There is another Boulevard type street along this way too … its almost like a long thin park running down the middle of the road …

_MG_9099-1 _MG_9101-1

We also stopped at a bakery on our way home to grab some fresh Barbari bread … before heading home to get ready for the party …

_MG_9103-1 _MG_9104-1A lot of people showed up that evening … all of my cousins and Aunts who were in Tehran at the time came to see us … it was really great to see everyone all together and generally to catch up … for Perry it was also the first time he was meeting most of them …

The photo above is of my Mum with four of her Sisters and my cousin Saghi in the kitchen at my Aunt Nahid’s home …

There was so much food but it was all so delicious too …

Finally a couple of group shots to finish off the night …

One of the other things that we did a lot of while we were in Tehran was drink copious amounts of Pomegranate juice … I really like the stuff but don’t really buy it here cause its never quite as good as when its fresh … in Iran and especially Tehran there are lots of shops/stalls/kiosks etc that do fresh fruit juices … and some are soley dedicated to Pomegranates … we may have visited a few times in the 3-4 days were there …

Funny or not so funny story … depending on how you want to look at it … on that first day we landed in Tehran and went for the walk around Aria Shahr … I was taking a few pictures as we walked around and I spotted this pomegranate stall (shown above) from across the road … we always go to this one when I’m over visiting and so I decided rather innocently to take a picture of it … well as it turned out a police car passed through the scene just as I took a couple of photos …

Next thing I know a Police officer is approaching and yelling at me asking why I was trying to take pictures of the Police car … well up until that point I didn’t even realise a Police car had passed by let alone that I had taken a picture of it … I’m trying to explain all of this while the Officer is continuing to yell at me accusing me of purposely trying to take pictures of the Police and that if I didn’t delete the pictures he’d arrest me for being a spy … Perfect! This wasn’t exactly the kind of introduction to Iran I had been hoping for Perry to experience …

I pulled up the pictures and tried to show him I was deleting them … I even noticed that the police car wasn’t even recognizable in the pictures … only a small corner of the car ended up in the photos in the first place … but the Officer didn’t care … he kept yelling at me and threating to cart me off to Prison … finally happy that I’d deleted the offending photos I left … Poor Perry had no idea what had happened considering the whole thing must have just sounded like a lot of Farsi being shouted around on a busy street corner … (which it was) … and my Mum was pretty shook up after … she didn’t let go of my arm for a while …

Personally I was actually rather surprised at how calm I managed to stay throughout the whole incident … usually when someone starts yelling false accusations at me I get pretty wound up … defensive and argumentative too … none of that would have helped in this situation so I was glad I was able to keep a level head …

It is actually the only time in all the years I’ve ever been travelling to Iran where I’ve had an issue with the Police like this … it was just bad luck but I learnt my lesson and always made sure to check for any military/police cars/people before I took any more photos when we were out and about … Also as a point to note none of us were bothered again on this trip by anyone whether it be for photos or anything else …

When we went round to Ghazaleh’s home after our morning at the BIG BAZAAR we stopped at another Pomegranate place to get a “Pomegranate Combo Thing” … we stayed in the car and spotted this little bunny in the hedges by the road … I got a bit concerned that it was lost … but we soon found out he belonged to the Pomegranate shop owner … I guess it also explains why he had some pink patches on his fur …

_MG_9454-1 _MG_9458-1

This stuff is amazing … a combination of Pomegranate Slushy, Ice Cream, Jelly, Paste, Seeds and a kind of Pomegranate fruit roll up … so much yums!

_MG_9462-1 IMG_1163-1

On our last day in Tehran after we got back from seeing some of the OLD PARTS OF TOWN … we stopped back at the Pomegranate stall in Aria Shahr to get one final slushy and a bottle of juice to take home with us … in fact I ended up drinking almost that whole bottle on my own that afternoon …

One afternoon when we were home I took Perry up onto the roof of my Aunt Nahid’s building … I have a lot of wonderful memories up there playing around with cousins on previous trips … and its been interesting to see how the skyline has changed in the last few years alone …
_MG_9828-1 There is alot of construction going on … many of the older blocks have been knocked down and are being rebuilt …

_MG_9830-1 _MG_9832-1

The building in the right of this photos was recently rebuilt … before it was the same height as my Aunt Nahid’s building … now its a few stories higher …

_MG_9839-1 The two blocks on the left in the photo below were still under CONSTRUCTION when I was here last year … _MG_9842-1 _MG_9853-1

That flyover in the background of the photo above is all new … when I was here LAST YEAR it was all under construction …

_MG_9833-1 _MG_9847-1 _MG_9854-1 One night we were in Tehran Ghazaleh had arranged for us to go out for dinner at Gilaneh … a restaurant in Tehran which specialises in Northern Iranian cuisine … the food is really good …

IMG_2212-1

We ended up ordering a couple platters with a variety of Kebabs on each … the traditionally Northern ones are known as Kabab Torsh or Sour Kebabs … they are made with a pomegranate and walnut marinade and are very tasty …

That is it from the Tehran posts … next up are the photos from Shiraz …

Till next time …

  1. Great posts! Thanks you for all the amazing pictures.
Dear Mina and Perry, we are doing a cultural enrichment program in my son’s pre-school about Iran. I think you have some very fantastic pictures. I would love to have your permission to be able to use some of these pictures in our displays. Could you please contact me? Thanks, Ghazaleh
