Old Macau Wanderings … St Paul’s Ruins & Stuff …

Hey everyone … welcome to our last post from our trip to Hong Kong / Macau … I cannot believe its taken me a month after we returned from the trip to finish posting everything … a lot happened and I took a lot of pictures … anyway here we go …

On the last full day of our trip we checked out of our hotel in the morning and left our bags with reception before heading out … We ended up staying at the Hotel Lisboa in Macau … which turned out to be pretty well located … right near a bus station and walking distance to much of Old Macau and some of the other big name hotels (MGM etc) …

We picked this place not just for its location but also for its old vegas/casino style look … and we weren’t disappointed … our room was pretty old school …

_MG_6265-1 _MG_5845-1 _MG_5837-1The views from the room were pretty great too … we could see out over the lake and across to Macau Tower …

_MG_6264-1 _MG_5844-1_MG_5841-1The room was relatively high-tec too … the shower had more controls/options than we knew what to do with … Perry had an interesting time the first time he went to use it … took about 10mins to figure out how to even get it to turn on …

_MG_5851-1Not to mention my bedside table had all the buttons and knobs to control the lights in our room … it usually took 2 or 3 goes before I got the right one …

_MG_5852-1It was my favourite place we stayed on this trip … although having said that the first hotel we stayed in was great too … and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly … I just liked the old school vibe and feeling we got from this one …

Anyway … after we checked out that last morning we started walking towards the old part of Macau … we headed to Senado Square first … which was still covered in Christmas decorations …

_MG_6271-1 _MG_6270-1 _MG_6272-1 _MG_6287-1 _MG_6283-1We stopped for a quick bite to eat … it was getting on in the morning and we still hadn’t eaten breakfast … after we just meandered around some of the small streets leading up to the St Paul’s Ruins … we passed lots of small shops and stalls …

_MG_6285-1 _MG_6301-1 _MG_6311-1 _MG_6318-1Before we finally made it to the Ruins of St Paul’s …

_MG_6299-1 _MG_6309-1 _MG_6302-1 _MG_6304-1It was really beautiful … but in all honesty I wasn’t feeling very well that morning … by the time this last picture was taken above I felt like I just wanted to go back to bed … (you can probably tell by the look on my face) … so rather than forcing ourselves to stay out longer and not really enjoying it we walked back to the hotel to grab our bags and hoped a ride back to the Ferry Terminal … we figured we’d just get an earlier ferry back to Hong Kong and get to our hotel room a couple hours earlier than planned …

Which turned out to be a great idea … the rest during the ferry ride over and in the taxi to the Airport Hotel was just what we both needed to recoup a little … once settled in at the hotel we decided to go figure out what would be the best way to get to the actual terminal in the morning … and I wanted to return our Octopus Cards (the Hong Kong version of an Oyster (UK) or Nol (UAE) card) …

Thankfully it was a 15 min walk through a connecting bridge tunnel from the hotel lobby to the terminal … and there was a dedicated desk for returning the Octopus Cards … after we grabbed some food before getting back to the hotel to do a final check on our bags … get a little blogging done and we both tried to get an early nights sleep … our flight was really early in the morning so it was nice to be able to literally roll out of bed at 4am and be in the airport terminal by 4.30am …

We had such a great trip overall even with being sick … we were both pleasantly surprised with Macau … I in particular didn’t have any expectations when we first decided to go … and left feeling like I could have spent a couple more days there … as for Hong Kong itself … well I wouldn’t mind going back there again someday … there were plenty of things on our list that we didn’t get around to … so I guess we will keep that for next time …

Till next time …

  1. For some reason the “like” button won’t load, so I can’t show my appreciation of your pictures and blog post in the time honoured fashion. I enjoyed the “crowd” pictures the most, just people going about their daily business. A nice change from pics of tourist attractions.

But then again, perhaps they were all “extras”, hired in by the tourism board to make your stay more lively:)
