The Venetian … & Wandering Around Taipa …

Hey everyone … so I’m back with another Hong Kong / Macau update … this time I’m moving onto the Macau side of our trip … I already posted about going to see the PANDAS when we were in Macau … I just couldn’t wait to share the pictures from that morning … but after we were done there we headed back towards the Taipa area of Macau and hopped off the bus outside the Venetian hotel …

The Venetian in Macau is actually the largest Casino Hotel in the World … and surprisingly Macau is ahead of Las Vegas in terms of amount of money turned over from gambling with almost THREE TIMES THE AMOUNT OF MONEY made from gambling than Vegas … which is slightly crazy … and honestly when we got to Macau we did kind of expect things to be a little bit more similar to Vegas … in fact it was quite the opposite … everything seemed really calm and not at all what we expected …

_MG_6015-1 _MG_6026-1 _MG_6030-1 _MG_6036-1 _MG_6037-1The Venetian itself was pretty huge … it was a hotel/casino/shopping mall all rolled into one contained building … the casino took up most of the centre on the ground floor …

_MG_6040-1There were shopping ‘avenues’ all around the perimeter … along with a canal that went all around the hotel where you could take a Gondola ride if you fancied …

_MG_6048-1 _MG_6081-1 _MG_6054-1 _MG_6065-1 _MG_6071-1We stopped at Lord Stow’s Bakery for some Custard Tarts … these are supposedly some of the best Custard Tarts in Macau and to be honest they were pretty darn good …

When we were done at the Venetian we did go for a little wander around a couple of the other casinos in the area but to be honest Casino’s aren’t really our thing … so we opted to walk over to the old part of Taipa …

_MG_6117-1 _MG_6120-1We ended up walking around the back of this large pond/lake and into the Old Taipa village … Macau used to be a Portuguese Colony up until it was handed back to China in 1999 … so the architecture is very European in style …

_MG_6128-1 _MG_6132-1 _MG_6133-1It was a lovely area to just walk around and look at the pretty buildings … even if most of them looked a little worse for wear … it just added to the charm …

_MG_6138-1 _MG_6145-1We finally stumbled across the main shopping street in Old Taipa … and perused the stores here for a while …

_MG_6159-1 _MG_6163-1 _MG_6168-1 _MG_6178-1 _MG_6182-1We sat down for a while to have a coffee and rest our feet a bit … we had booked a table at a highly recommended restaurant nearby later in the evening … since we still had a couple hours to spare before our reservation we thought we’d go wander around some more of the back streets to see what we could find …

_MG_6171-1 _MG_6177-1 _MG_6185-1 _MG_6186-1 _MG_6191-1We happened upon this little temple just off one of the side roads … it was very smokey inside with all the incense burning … but still quite pretty …

_MG_6195-1 _MG_6202-1We popped into a few small shops as we walked around and ended up at a cute little one called Tea Time … where we got chatting with the owner about the 200 or so different varieties of tea that she sold …

_MG_6229-1 _MG_6228-1We ended up getting three bags of different teas to try when we got home … so far we have tried one of them called Tokyo … I liked it although I think next time I won’t let it brew for as long … it was quite a strong flavour …

_MG_6226-1 _MG_6225-1We wandered back to the main square near where the restaurant was and sat on a bench … chatting and watching the people go by … and this little guy being all adorable …

_MG_6236-1Finally we headed to the restaurant … the place is called Antonio’s and does Portuguese cuisine … we were both surprised by how good the food was … I’m not really sure what we had expected but it was really yummy … and the wine wasn’t half bad either …

_MG_6243-1 _MG_6245-1 By the time we made it back to the hotel we were both knackered … it wasn’t that late in the evening but we had been on our feet for a good portion of the day and we were still suffering the effects of our cold … so we felt pretty drained …

_MG_6248-1It was nice to just climb into bed and watch a bit of TV before falling asleep …

That is it for this one … stay tuned as my next post about our trip will be the last …

Till next time …
