NEW YEARS EVE … Hong Kong … Central – Victoria Peak – Fireworks …

Hey everyone … I feel like its taking me ages to publish these posts from our Hong Kong/Macau trip … its almost a month since we got back and I’m still posting them … although I’m almost all the way through with them now … only two more to go after this!

We actually ended up spending New Years Eve in Hong Kong … and while we knew we wanted to go see the fireworks we weren’t too sure exactly what our plans would be for the evening … we had talked about going down by the Harbour to watch the fireworks … but then figured it would be so crowded … cold … and a nightmare to get back to our hotel on the other side of the water … so we really didn’t want to do that … I’ve not ever spent a successful New Years out … all the good ones have been at a friends house party …

Anyway it got to the evening before New Years and Perry and I were still mulling over our options of what we could do … although to be fair we had left it pretty late so I wasn’t too hopeful … while we were googling ideas and reading other blogs and forums to find out what we could do … Perry found one blog where a guy talked about booking a window seat at a restaurant at Victoria Peak …

We had already planned on going up to Victoria Peak that day so we thought we’d try our luck … after scouring their website I started ringing round the different restaurants to see if anyone had a space … I didn’t have much initially … the first few were either fully booked up or had extortionate NYE packages … finally I rang the Chinese Restaurant at the top and they actually had a window seat available with views of the Harbour … and so I managed to book us a table for 10.30pm …

_MG_5467-1 _MG_5477-1 _MG_5480-1So by the time we had gotten up … had some food … sorted out our plans for the evening and gotten ready to leave it was already late morning … which was fine by us … we were enjoying taking it easy on this trip … We headed out to the Central area of Hong Kong Island … Perry wanted to get a bag he had seen earlier in the trip and I wanted to check out the Mid Level Escalators while we were there too …

_MG_5484-1Perry with his new backpack … he loves this thing …

_MG_5489-1 _MG_5493-1There was this massive queue outside a bakery called Jenny’s Bakery … we later looked it up online and apparently its famous for a certain type of biscuit that they make … people were walking out of that place with bags and bags of these tinned biscuits …

_MG_5506-1 _MG_5511-1The Mid – Level Escalators are literally that … escalators that run up the side of the mountain in the middle of the Central area of Hong Kong Island … I’ve never seen anything like it before … but it sure was a fun way to go uphill without killing our legs …

_MG_5512-1 _MG_5514-1 _MG_5517-1 _MG_5522-1 _MG_5523-1 _MG_5525-1Once at the top of the Escalator’s it was a pretty interesting view back down … we were actually on our way to catch the Cable Car that goes up the side of the mountain to Victoria Peak … we thought we would go while its day time to see the views before we go back again in the evening …

_MG_5528-1 _MG_5529-1 _MG_5534-1So while we walked around a more suburban area of Hong Kong … it gave a whole new meaning to the term Urban Jungle …

When we finally got to the Cable Car station the queue to just get a ticket was over 2hrs long … so we quickly scrapped that idea and hopped a taxi up to the top … it was quite a quick ride so we were there in no time … and after a quick bite to eat (we had a very late lunch that day) we headed over to the Sky Terrace to take in some of the city views from up top …

_MG_5558-1 _MG_5559-1 _MG_5566-1 _MG_5561-1 _MG_5563-1 _MG_5569-1While we were really lucky the whole time we were there it didn’t rain … and the weather for the most part wasn’t even all that cold … but it was rather smoggy … you can see it best in some of these pictures how hazy the sky was … but I hear its quite rare to have a totally clear day in Hong Kong … it was really pretty in any case …

There is a pretty large shopping/restaurant complex at the top …

Since by the time we got up there it was close to sunset … we got to see the sun coming down over the water too …

_MG_5606-1 _MG_5610-1

We were quite tired by this point and the queue for the cable car again was ridiculously long … so we hopped another taxi back to the hotel … which was actually a great idea cause it gave us a good understanding of how long it would take later that evening to get a taxi up to the restaurant …

We stayed at the hotel and rested for a few hours … I finished packing our bags up … we were headed for Macau the next day … and just enjoyed relaxing for a bit … before getting ready again and catching yet another taxi back up to the top of Victoria Peak … surprisingly traffic wasn’t all that bad … and we got up there with plenty of time to spare …

_MG_5619-1We wandered around a bit taking in the Christmas lights and decorations around the place before finally heading to the restaurant … they also happened to serve Peking Duck … it was the one thing I wanted to have while we were there that I hadn’t yet been able to order anywhere we had been … I was really excited for the duck … and the great views didn’t hurt either …

Can you see the writing lit up on the side of the building?

_MG_5665-1

Before long it was time for the new years countdown … and the fireworks … it was actually a great evening … we got to have Duck … we got to see the fireworks … we had a great view … and best of all we were warm for the whole thing!

_MG_5802-1 _MG_5687-1 _MG_5826-1 _MG_5814-1Even though it took us almost 2hrs to catch a taxi back down the mountain … that was really the only blip in our evening … we otherwise had a brilliant time and probably the best New Years Eve that I’ve had (where I’ve not been at a friends house party) …

_MG_5834-1And even though its a month late … Happy 2014 … and I can’t believe January is already over …

That is it for now … Stay tuned for the next update coming soon …

Till next time …

Mina X
