Thursday’s Weekly Roundup … Car Troubles … Eid Al Adha & Another Visitor …

Hey so we’ve had a pretty hectic week of ups and downs … it started with a pretty big downer last Thursday … after work I was heading home and had popped into the supermarket to pick up some stuff for the weekend … as I came out of the car park and just before I joined the main road the car stopped working inexplicably …

I was sat there in the Golf unable to go anywhere … at first I was just frustrated … then soon realised there was a bigger problem and no matter what I did the car wouldn’t move … the engine turned on and everything electrical worked … but when the car was put into Drive or Reverse it wouldn’t budge … the onboard computer had gone into safe mode but at the same time wouldn’t tell me what the problem was …

At this point I have a queue of cars waiting behind me to get out … security have come over to ask me what the problem is … I’d been trying unsuccessfully to get hold of Perry … and trying to call our Car Insurance company at the same time … (having two phones has its advantages sometimes) …

Finally some of the security guys pushed me out onto the hard shoulder so the other cars behind could get past … I managed to speak to the Insurance company and they were sending a recovery vehicle to collect the car … and I finally got through to Perry who left work to come help me out …

Eventually we got the car to a garage not too far from where we live and they checked it out … by Saturday morning they were able to tell us it was a transmission issue but until they started taking the gearbox apart they wouldn’t know exactly what the problem was … Perry was a bit wary of going down this route knowing full well it could end up costing a fortune …

So we thought it best to get it checked out by Volkswagen first … we both thought the Warranty on the car had run out at the start of October as it only lasts for 3 years and was first registered in Oct 2010 … Perry was annoyed this had happened just outside of the warranty period especially as we had no idea of the cost for repairing it …

Anyway we got it to the Volkswagen workshop in the early afternoon on Saturday and after talking through the details with the gentlemen there … the question of the warranty came up … we asked him to check the exact date the warranty had run out and seriously luck must have been on our side because as it turned out we still had a day left on the warranty …

It was such a relief … and as it turned out the part that had gone wrong was one that had previously been a problem for other Golf’s of the same model and year … there had actually been recalls in several countries to fix this … however there hadn’t been any here … thankfully it will all be covered by the warranty … it does mean we are now without the Golf for a couple weeks while they wait for the part to arrive from Germany … but we should get it back by the end of this month and Perry and I should be able to manage with one car between us for this time (Perry has a hire car for work) …

Onto more positive news … on Friday we met up with Perry’s family at the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray hotel on the Palm where they were staying for the last few nights in Dubai … we joined them for some lunch and to spend some time with them and the girls before they leave …

Then after we had said our goodbye’s Perry and I headed over the SANDANCE on the beach by Atlantis for the rest of the evening …

20131013-074052.jpgSaturday was a rather productive day … other than getting the car sorted (see earlier) we also had the maintenance people come by and fix a bunch of stuff in the apartment … as well as sorting out a few other errands along the way …

20131016-163451.jpgWe’ve also been trying to eat healthier recently too … been slipping back into bad habits … above breakfast … and below Lunch and Dinner … still eating things we like just trying to have less of them and filling the rest of the plate with salad instead …

20131016-163513.jpg 20131016-163526.jpgPerry and I both had work on Sunday and then the rest of the week has been a public holiday in celebration of Eid Al Adha … (well Perry had to go to work today but I had today off too) … we got up bright and early on Monday morning (4am) to go and collect Perry’s friend Paul from the airport …

By the time we got back and chatted for a bit … we watched the sunrise from the balcony … then Paul started to crash so he slept for a bit … Perry had a work conference call he had to Skype in on at 6.30am so I tried to nap on the sofa for a bit unsuccessfully … We all eventually woke up and went out for the rest of the day … there may have been another nap somewhere in the middle there … But I’ll be posting more about Monday later …

_MG_9582-120131016-163613.jpgOn Tuesday we took Paul Jet Skiing in Sharjah … we had a great time and it was lots of fun … certainly more fun with the weather having cooled off abit … but again I’ll be posting more about that another time …

DCIM102GOPROWe ended up ordering in kebabs for Lunch and we took Paul for a walk along the JBR Beach and out for Italian for dinner … spotting the Bentley police car along our way …

20131016-163540.jpg20131017-100827.jpg20131016-163551.jpgYesterday was a rather relaxing day … spent the morning at home and by the pool … then Paul and Perry headed out for lunch and to show Paul Mall of the Emirates … and later in the afternoon they played a round of Golf at the nearby golf course … I stayed at home for the day as I wasn’t feeling 100% …

20131016-194306.jpgToday as I mentioned earlier Perry has had to go to work … so I will be taking Paul up to the old part of Dubai later this afternoon to explore Bastikiya and the areas around there …

Our plans for the weekend are generally quite loose at the moment … we will be heading to a Water-park at some point but as for anything else we haven’t made any definitive plans as yet …

That is it for this week …

Till next time …
