Thursday’s Weekly Roundup … Radio Competitions … Promotions & Long Weekends …

Well what a difference a week makes eh? … I spent most of last week’s roundup post talking about how unexciting the week had been and how uninteresting it was … well this week has been the complete polar opposite … so much has happened in the last 7 days … its actually a bit crazy how different the two weeks have been … here is what we got up to starting with last Thursday evening …

After work on Thursday Perry and I headed out to try a new Lebanese restaurant in Pier 7 attached to Marina Mall … the building itself is cylindrical and had been built when we moved here … but it had been left uncompleted … in the last few months we’ve been watching from our apartment as they finally finished the construction and fit out of the building … there are a couple other restaurants opening up there soon which we are excited about trying out soon …

photo 1This time we went to the Lebanese seafood restaurant Abd El Wahab … the food was lovely and the views were great too … although it was odd sitting outside eating dinner with a view of our building … we could even pick out our actual apartment from the lights we had left on for the cats … all in all it was a good evening … and probably one of the last nights we were able to sit outside for a meal this summer … its seriously starting to get too hot and sticky …

photo 2Friday morning we spent the morning at home and I made pancakes with frozen berries … we couldn’t decide so ended up making them half raspberry and half wild blueberries … yum yum …

photo 3The rest of that day was spent at home relaxing … watching TV and playing with the kittens … in the late afternoon we headed down to Festival City shopping centre for a wander round … I wanted to grab a couple frames from Ikea which ended up with us buying some bathroom organising shelves … how is it that always ends up happening at Ikea .. you go in for one thing and leave with 10 things you didn’t even know you needed???

photo 4In either case they got strapped into their seatbelts for the ride home … we had a few other errands to do while we were there and Perry picked up some new clothes too … so quite a productive evening all in all …

Saturday was another lovely sunshiney day in Dubai … our friends Cat and Gav are expecting their second baby in a couple months and last Saturday was Cat’s baby shower … so I dropped Perry off at their home to spend some time with Gav and little Charlie … who really isn’t that little anymore … he’s really grown since the last time I saw him … then with Cat and a couple other of the guests we headed down to the Al Qasr hotel where all 12 people who made it enjoyed the most incredible Afternoon Tea … there was just so much food … and the Hot Chocolates were served in something that looked more like a bowl rather than a mug … it was a lovely afternoon …

photo 1Sunday to Wednesday kinda flew by in a bit of a blur for me work wise … it was even crazier and busier than usual … but I really enjoyed it … I felt productive and appreciated for the work I was doing as well, which I find usually makes me want to do even better going forward …

Perry did have a busy week too just not as crazy busy as mine … he also had some good news work wise and found out this week he has been promoted … which is brilliant and I’m really quite proud of him for securing a promotion so soon after joining the company …

Most afternoons this week I’ve been driving home at a time when the radio station Dubai 92 run one of their Drive Time competitions … they run a Scandal segment on the show where they spend 5mins talking about some sort of Celebrity gossip and then straight after ask a really simple question which you text in your answer to and if you get picked you win whatever the prize is that is up for grabs that evening … its anything from a night in a hotel, to a meal at a fancy restaurant, or some sort of experience, etc …

I always here these and occasionally I’ll enter if I’m stuck at some traffic lights but usually I don’t … anyway so about 10mins before they announce the winner on the station I get a call from Perry saying that he thinks he just won the competition … which I thought was hilarious and didn’t quite believe him … turns out the question came up just as he got into the car so he just text in … and they called him back to say he’d won … and the prize was a weekend away at the 5* Shangri-La Hotel in Abu Dhabi … so we were pretty happy about that …

It wasn’t until I got home that I found out though that Perry hadn’t even heard the Scandal bit on the radio before hand and had only tuned in as they had asked the question … he actually had to google the answer before texting in which made the whole situation even funnier for me … that and the fact that the question was about Kim Kardashian and her baby … a topic Perry has no interest in whatsoever!

Anyway so riding on the high of getting a promotion and winning a 5* weekend break away in one day … Perry decided to try his luck a second time and entered the next day too … so what happened??? … he won again … this time a weekend away at the Hilton Hotel in Abu Dhabi … he honestly believes he was the only person to text in as they always called him back straight away …

Either way this week has been a good one for Perry … He got promoted and won two 5* weekends away in Abu Dhabi … not bad going really … I on the other hand had an absolutely manic week … each day got crazier and busier than usual culminating in yesterday evening when I ended up staying at work till 9pm … not eating all day … and barely having time to stop long enough to go to the toilet …

We had a big report to do and a whole bunch of back up information to go with it to submit … most of this data had to come from our companies Head Office in America … we had 2 days to pull everything together pretty much from scratch … and I am still astounded that we managed it … it was a proper team effort … my direct manager, and the receptionist in Dubai, the company’s CEO, CFO and other head office staff from the US all helped me to get all the data and information I needed to pull this submission together …

I wrote over 5,000 words in a day as well as juggling about 100 other tasks throughout the day … it was incredibly stressful and I’m not sure I’d live for very long if I had to go through that every week … but it was an incredible sense of achievement at the end of it … at 9pm the three of us in the site office were sat round my laptop waiting for the emails to clear out of my outbox so we could all go home … we were all shattered … no one had really eaten properly that day … but we were happy it was finally over and finished …

Now I’m happily at home enjoying a lovely long weekend … Perry and I have plenty of things planned for the next couple days … this morning we had arranged to go out for a Pub Breakfast with our friends Ian and Sarah … but as we have this day off for an Islamic holiday its a Dry day in Dubai and the majority of the pubs and bars are closed for the day because of this … we had rather stupidly forgotten this fact … oh and Ian had completely forgotten about the plans too … so as we had walked to the Pub in JLT we hitched a ride in Sarah’s Jeep … with Perry in the boot (as the back seats were taken out) … and picked up some breakfast food and invaded Ian’s home for the morning …

photo 2The whole reason we had planned to go out for breakfast was so that we would actually go out … as we pretty much always end up going round to someones house when the four of us meet up … so we thought we would do something different … and then as soon as something went wrong … we all caved and just went round to Ian’s … clearly we need to work more on this …

It was a good morning in the end catching up with Ian and Sarah … had some yummy breakfast and generally stuffed ourselves … around midday we headed home to pick up some vouchers that we received in exchange for points from one of the credit cards we had been using … its one we are planning on cancelling now as we don’t need it … but thought we’d cash in on the points we had built up and used it as partial payment towards a new TV …

This was something we had discussed on and off since we moved to Dubai … and we kept umming and ahhing about when to get one … if we really needed one … etc etc … but with these vouchers it actually made it a lot more cost effective … so with a budget in mind we headed out and soon we found the one that Perry was happy with (I didn’t really mind too much) …

photo 3And we brought home a monster of a 50″ LED TV … we didn’t really fancy paying stupid amounts of money for something that had 3D TV which we were never going to use so were actually able to get a really good deal on the one we did pick because it doesn’t have 3D TV … win win …

photo 4The rest of the afternoon has been spent with Perry playing around with his new toy … and the cats have been kept distracted with the new TV box to play with … while I’m sat on my laptop tapping out this post …

photo 5As for our plans for the rest of the weekend … well this evening we are meeting up with our friends Terri and Cliff for dinner … tomorrow morning and daytime we are probably just going to be out running errands and taking it easy … maybe even get those Ikea bathroom shelf things done (they are still in their boxes by the front door) … I need to re-do our Photo Wall as its now partially obscured by the new TV … Tomorrow afternoon we have been invited to dinner by one of Perry’s colleagues …

Finally on Saturday Perry has arranged for us to go to the Burj Al Arab for Afternoon Tea at the Sky Bar … I’m really looking forward to this … it’s something we’ve been wanting to do since we moved here … so what with Perry’s promotion this week … winning two radio competitions … and the fact that it is the anniversary of our first date this weekend … we thought it was a good a reason as any to go celebrate …

The long weekend has started off pretty great … and I’m looking forward to the rest of it … hope everyone else is having a great end to their week …

Till next time …

Mina X
