Fostering Kittens … Miles & Amy …

Well as you are all probably aware by now Perry and I are fostering two adorable little kittens … It all started early last week when Perry sent me a message about some abandoned kittens that needed a foster home … the charity Feline Friends in Dubai had posted it on their page and Perry had passed on the message … Without thinking too much about it at the time I jumped on it and rang them straight away … leaving a message and hoping someone would get back to me as soon as they could …

To give a bit of a background to all of this … one of the things I had wanted to do when we first moved here was to foster cats/kittens … even before we got our boys Hugo and Derek … but timing never really worked out too well … we either had holidays coming up or visitors over … and then we had our own kittens … basically there was always something which got in the way … and I didn’t want to be kind of person who offers to foster a  cat/kitten and then have to call back in a couple weeks to ask for someone else to take over cause I have a holiday or visitors … the last thing an abandoned cat/kitten needs is more instability …

Change is stressful for animals (one of the reasons why we opt to pay extra to have a pet sitter come to our home while we are away rather than put the boys in a cat kennel place which is much cheaper) … and constantly being moved from one home to another isn’t good for them either … so I had wanted to wait till we were able to fully commit to looking after a cat for a decent chunk of time before doing it …

As it turns out the timing couldn’t have been better … we’ve just come back from Istanbul … and don’t plan on having another holiday over the Summer … so we will be around for at least the next 2-3 months if not longer … and as it is fast approaching the hot summer months when visitors tend to be scarce … we have the spare room available for any cats/kittens in case they do not get along too well with the boys … (this is what we ended up doing when we looked after our friends cat last summer) …

Anyway so getting back to the story … I got a phone call the day after my initial inquiry where they explained that they had put me down to take in two of the baby kittens … and by baby I mean baby … these little ones were only 4 weeks old … so the arrangements were made … and I picked them up the following afternoon (Tuesday 14th May) …

_MG_7802-1 _MG_7800-1There were 4 kittens in total … one boy and 3 girls … they were found in a cardboard box dumped on some wasteland in Al Wasl, Dubai … and no mother cat in sight … I ended up taking home the boy and one of the girls … we ended up changing the names they came with to Miles (ginger boy) and Amy (tabby girl) … you can read about why we did that in the CATURDAY post from the weekend …

_MG_7813-1_MG_7814-1_MG_7696-1 _MG_7698-1So we have had the little ones for a week now … and boy are they growing fast … they eat like horses and thankfully are fully litter trained … they drink their water and are content when left alone during the day …

_MG_7807-1 _MG_7805-1They are so adorable its crazy … and they look so different as kittens than the boys did when we first got them … but most Arabic cats have quite triangular faces with large ears … they were dinky when we first got them home … I even weighed them so I could keep track of how they are growing … Miles originally weighed 390 grams while Amy came in at 371 grams when they were 4 weeks old …

IMG_9333-1 IMG_9342-1Today they are officially 5 weeks old and they currently weigh … Miles is now 540 grams (he’s put on about 38%) and Amy is now 490 grams (she’s put on about 32%) … they grow so fast and are noticeably bigger than when we first brought them home … Amy is still significantly smaller than Miles though so will be keeping an eye on their eating to make sure he’s not bullying her for more food …

photo 1 photo 2Miles is also a lot more boisterous than Amy and can be a bit of a bully when it comes to feeding time … so I’ve taken to putting down two plates of food to try and stop them fighting a bit … They are of the mind that if they cover the food with their bodies they can eat it all that much quicker … so as you can imagine it does get messy sometimes …

_MG_7760-1 _MG_7791-1 _MG_7747-1Generally they are really good … playful and bound around alot after each other and the toys we have left out for them to play with … Amy in particular loves playing with the little plastic balls and runs around patting them from side to side … she’s a right little footballer scooting around the room …

_MG_7768-1 _MG_7756-1 _MG_7765-1Miles is usually more interesting in chewing on our fingers or trying to catch Amy’s tail … but even he loves the toys too …

_MG_7745-1 _MG_7737-1 _MG_7740-1 _MG_7731-1IMG_9366-1We got some good clips of them over the weekend … I’ve done a quick video to share with you all today … basically its lots of jumping around … scampering and just plain cuteness going on …

Both of them seem to have gotten pretty attached to both Perry and myself … as soon as we walk in through the door they usually scamper up to us and start clambering onto our feet … meowing for attention and play time … they love to be stroked and petted …

IMG_9373-1 IMG_9429-1 IMG_9434-1 IMG_9473-1 IMG_9469-1 IMG_9460-1They will even sit and watch the Apprentice with me on iPlayer …

IMG_9476-1A lot of the time if I just sit on the floor they scamper over and climb into my lap … either looking for a finger to chew on (Miles) or some cuddles (Amy) … and if its getting late at night … they both just snuggle up on my lap and look like they are about to fall asleep …

photoIMG_9305-1 IMG_9294-1I’ve filled one of Perry’s socks with rice and we warm this up in the microwave for them in the evenings so they can have something to snuggle up with … that and a cuddly toy in their cat bed (which our boys have never used so I’m glad someone likes it) gives them a warm place to sleep …

IMG_9276-1I’m looking forward to introducing them to the boys over the weekend … we have started to introduce their smells to each other … and our boys appear to be quite wary of the little ones … well actually its Hugo more than Derek that appears to be afraid of these new smells … which is odd really … as Hugo is the first to make friends with strange people he hasn’t met before …

_MG_7728-1 _MG_7727-1 _MG_7720-1 _MG_7717-1 _MG_7714-1 _MG_7713-1A couple days ago I had a couple of friends round and the kittens took them right away … they aren’t scared of strangers … clambering all over Joelle’s lap and then falling asleep on Rupa … I swear Rupa is some sort of cat whisperer …

_MG_7819-1 _MG_7826-1 _MG_7842-1

How cute are these two when they are sleeping???

_MG_7848-1 _MG_7856-1 _MG_7863-1Anyway I’ll let you know how it goes when we introduce them to the boys … all I know is it will probably be a slow process introducing them slowly over a few weeks to avoid scaring any of them … the thing is our boys have never met kittens before … and the only other cat they have met was Pooh who we looked after last summer … but that was a whole different story …

That’s it for this one … Stay tuned for more baby kitten updates …

Till next time …

Mina X
