Dubai Mall Aquarium … Glass Bottom Boats, Big Fish & Penguins …

Last weekend we decided to go out and do something that day that we hadn’t done yet whilst in Dubai but had been meaning to do since we got here … well there are quite a few things on that list at this point but we settled on going to the Dubai Mall Aquarium for the morning …

Even though we got there relatively early there was still a queue to get tickets … not too bad though … and once past the queue people were walking along at different paces so it didn’t feel too cramped …

_MG_7054-1 _MG_7139-1First you walk past the biggest single sheet of Aquarium glass in the world … pretty thick stuff … and some odd looking fishies …

_MG_7117-1 I think we counted about 8-9 Reef Sharks in the tank … may have missed one or two … but managed to get these 5 all in one picture …

_MG_7142-1Then you make your way through the tunnel in the middle of the Aquarium which gives you a 270 degree view of the fish and sea life … that was pretty fun and we spent quite a bit of time in there …

_MG_7145-1 _MG_7147-1 _MG_7155-1 _MG_7161-1 _MG_7169-1 _MG_7181-1We then headed up to the 2nd floor where we went for a ride in a glass bottom boat over the top of the aquarium itself … wasn’t great for pictures so we enjoyed the ride and tried to spot the fish through the glass bottom …

_MG_7421-1 _MG_7444-1Then we took our time to go through the Underwater Zoo … they had lots of different fish … crocodiles, penguins and other such stuff to see … we skipped the creepy crawly section as that has always been my least favourite part of going to the zoo …

_MG_7217-1 _MG_7219-1 _MG_7230-1They had a tank of little Piranha’s too …

_MG_7253-1There were a couple of snakes … curled up with some snakeskin on the side …

_MG_7263-1The enclosure with the otters appeared to be empty till we noticed the little feet poking out from the hollow tree trunk … there was a family of three otters having a nap …

_MG_7268-1Spotted a Chameleon among the leaves …

_MG_7302-1There were a couple of water rats who were more active than the otters …

_MG_7313-1 _MG_7326-1More fish …

_MG_7333-1 _MG_7346-1 _MG_7354-1 _MG_7391-1 _MG_7399-1 _MG_7452-1This crocodile didn’t look like he was planning on moving for a while …

_MG_7347-1Then we hit the Finding Nemo tank …

_MG_7461-1 _MG_7474-1 _MG_7480-1 _MG_7485-1 _MG_7490-1 _MG_7491-1 _MG_7518-1We came across a mega sized spider crab …

_MG_7538-1And spent a fair amount of time hanging out by the Penguins …

_MG_7555-1 _MG_7573-1 _MG_7577-1 _MG_7588-1 _MG_7591-1 _MG_7611-1 _MG_7615-1 _MG_7620-1Then just as we were coming up to the gift shop at the end … Perry stopped at this display … any guesses as to what it might be?

_MG_7635-1 _MG_7639-1Turns out they are Shark Eggs … apparently the first one that hatches then eats the other eggs … talk about having an evil sibling … I was equally grossed out by it and yet fascinated at the same time … it was always just one of those things I had never really thought about … The glass made it quite hard to get clear pictures but you should be able to just about make out the outline of the baby sharks around the yolk of the eggs …

_MG_7641-1Anyway that was the end of our trip to the Underwater Zoo and Aquarium … it was good fun and we both learnt a thing or two … and I can finally check it off the list of things we wanted to do while in Dubai …

Till next time …
