Musandam Camping Weekend … Oman … Dhow Cruise & Dolphins …

Hey everyone … welcome to the second part of our Musandam camping weekend update … still have a couple others to do but should be all finished in a few days … so after we had finished off cleaning and gutting the fish (see THIS post if you missed it) … we loaded up the cars and headed off to the meeting point to catch up with the rest of the group …

_MG_3189-1 _MG_3244-1All went well and we also managed to grab some fresh ingredients for the fish from the supermarket nearby … after everyone had gathered we headed off to the boats in one long convoy of cars … and once we had parked up we had to carry everything onto the boats ourselves …

_MG_3252-1 _MG_3254-1 _MG_3255-1It soon became quite apparent that everyone had gotten quite accustomed to the Dubai lifestyle and everyone … including ourselves … had over-packed considering we were only going away for one night …

_MG_3274-1Anyway once we had all gotten on board we settled down in our own little corner of the boat and enjoyed the scenery as we cruised along the waters …

_MG_3315-1We kept going for a while until we spotted some dolphins … at which point Sarah and Perry woke up to watch along with everyone else on the boat … it was great to see Dolphins again … Perry and I had seen some a few months ago on the BOAT TRIP we did in Muscat last December … but these ones came up much closer than last time …

_MG_3317-1 _MG_3354-1 _MG_3362-1 _MG_3390-1 _MG_3407-1 _MG_3418-1 _MG_3441-1 _MG_3444-1 _MG_3450-1 _MG_3459-1 _MG_3460-1 _MG_3465-1 _MG_3467-1There were even a couple of baby Dolphins in with the group …

_MG_3375-1 _MG_3397-1 _MG_3489-1 _MG_3498-1 _MG_3508-1 _MG_3525-1After spending some time watching the Dolphins we headed off of an Island known as Telegraph Island …

_MG_3545-1 _MG_3551-1 _MG_3548-1 _MG_3557-1 _MG_3566-1 _MG_3571-1It used to be a Telegraph Boosting station for Telegraphs being sent from London to India in the 19th Century … this is the explanation according to WIKIPEDIA

“In the 19th century, it was the location of a British repeater station used to boost telegraphic messages along the Persian Gulf submarine cable, which was part of the London to Karachi telegraphic cable. It was not an easy posting for the operators, with the severe summer heat making life extremely uncomfortable. Because of this, the island is, according to some travel agents and journalists, where the expression “go round the bend” comes from, a reference to the heat making British officers desperate to return to civilization, which meant a voyage around the bend in the Strait of Hormuz back to India … Today, Telegraph Island is an eerie reminder of the British Empire. Abandoned in the mid-1870’s, the island has remained deserted and only the crumbling ruins of the repeater station and the operators’ quarters can be seen. As tourism has grown in the Gulf region, so the island is regularly visited by dhows carrying tourists to view the ruins and to fish and snorkel in the waters around it”

_MG_3567-1We stopped here for a swimming/snorkeling session for those you fancied a dip … none of us really fancied going into the cold water … so we stayed on the boat and watched the others who did go in splashing around …

_MG_3582-1 _MG_3587-1 _MG_3592-1 _MG_3596-1 _MG_3601-1 _MG_3618-1Once everyone had had their fill of swimming lunch was served on the boats before we headed off for the beach …

_MG_3621-1 _MG_3625-1 _MG_3627-1That’s it for this post … stay tuned to hear how our evening went … along with what we ended up doing with those fish …

Till next time …

  3. HI Mina,

That is a lovely post. I read all four. Its a brilliant capture of a weekend well spent. We as a group of friends and family are planning to do the same for the upcoming National day weekend. Can you please let me know if they allow you to camp on the telegraph island ? Also if you could give us a pointer for the cost to hire a dhow so that we are not cheated 😉 … Thank a ton in advance !!

    • Hi thanks for reading … I don’t think they allow camping on telegraph island but I’m not sure … It wasn’t that big and it’s pretty much just a big rock … So I’m not sure how great it would be for camping … I’m not sure how much it costs to hire a dhow entirely we went as part of a bigger group and it cost about 300dhms a person.

      Hope that helps 🙂

      • Thanks for your prompt response. Can you please tell me the location where you camped ? I will be travelling with couple of kids and teenagers ( girls) so looking dfora a safe place for camping. Any other suggestions will be most welcome.

      • I don’t know the name of the place we camped it was all organised by the company we went with … Whichever dhow company you go with will have a camping place 🙂
