Musandam Camping Weekend … Oman … The Journey There & A Bit Of Fishing …

Hello everyone … so as you all know by now this past weekend Perry and I along with two of our friends Ian and Sarah went off camping in Musandam (an enclave of Oman which is actually separated from the main country buy a portion of the UAE) …

The trip was to go as follows …

  • Drive to Musandam and meet up with the others going on the trip in Khasab …
  • Go load up the Dhows (traditional boats) …
  • Cruise around the waters abit …
  • See dolphins …
  • Go swimming/snorkelling …
  • Have lunch …
  • Carry on cruising around …
  • Get dropped off at a secluded beach with no road access to camp for the night …
  • Spend the morning on the beach before being picked up again by boat to head back to our cars and go home …

That was the idea … so even though it wasn’t going to be the longest drive in the world we decided to leave really early before 7am to get there with plenty of time to cross the border and to have time so we can stop at some beaches along the way if we fancied it …

So we woke up at around 5am to get ready to head round to Ian’s for 6am … early I know … and believe me the kittens were none to happy about it either … Hugo was on our bed when we got up and he just sat there in his little sitting position that he does staring at us … sleepily blinking … and yawning … he was mightly unimpressed by the early morning wake up call … Derek was sleeping on the bath mat by the shower and was rudely awoken by Perry going for a shower … he didn’t move an inch either … Perry had to step over him to get in and out the shower … its odd cause the boys used to wake us up at 5am every morning for food when they were baby kittens …

Anyway once we were all packed and ready to go we headed over to Ian’s and had a coffee while we waited for Sarah to get there … and once there we rearranged the cars as needed before setting off …

_MG_2858-1As we were driving we saw the sunrise over sports city and the cricket stadium which was pretty … before pulling into a petrol station for fuel and some more coffee …

_MG_2860-1 _MG_2872-1 _MG_2879-1The drive to the border was relatively uneventful … its basically a straight road all the way there … we drove for a couple hours through Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Um Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimeh (RAK) to get to the border …

_MG_2889-1 _MG_2915-1 _MG_2919-1 _MG_2929-1 _MG_2932-1 _MG_2935-1Even at the border of the UAE and Oman you are never too far away from some Fish & Chips …

_MG_2939-1We had a small wait by the border as we got our passports stamped to exit the UAE and to enter Oman … thankfully we got ourselves sorted and on the way before a coach load of tourists showed up … whilst we were waiting at the border Perry pulled out one of our camping chairs and set up by the boot of our car to have a snack …

_MG_2942-1 _MG_2943-1After we crossed the border we drove along the coast road with the beach and Gulf waters to our left and tall mountains/cliffs on our right … it was a stunning drive … and after about 18-20km we pulled over at a beach for a break …

_MG_2957-1 _MG_2965-1The beach here on the left is the one we stopped at …

_MG_2970-1Once we got our and wandered around for a bit … took some photos and I dipped my toes in the water … the water was incredibly clear and ice cold … but really refreshing …

_MG_2973-1 _MG_2974-1 _MG_2977-1 _MG_2982-1 _MG_2983-1 _MG_2987-1 _MG_2989-1 _MG_2991-1 _MG_3009-1 _MG_3028-1Whilst we were wandering around the beach Perry headed back to the car to sit in some shade and have a drink … again he pulled out the camping chair …

_MG_3039-1 _MG_3034-1We also spotted some local Omani fishermen pulling in a fishing net along the beach …

_MG_3017-1 _MG_3041-1Perry came back down to the beach to join us and as one of the fishermen walked past he offered to help them … delighted by the extra pair of hands the fisherman took Perry off to show him what he needed to do …

_MG_3051-1 _MG_3057-1 _MG_3060-1 _MG_3066-1 _MG_3071-1 _MG_3075-1As much as I wanted to go and help myself I knew I would end up hurting my back (I have a long history of back problems) and in either case Perry wouldn’t have let me cause he’d have had to deal with me being in pain after … I turned to ask if Sarah or Ian wanted to help and is this the response I got …

_MG_3080-1Anyway we watched for a while as Perry helped and after he had done his part and was thirsty he stopped and we headed back to the cars for some water … as we got back to the cars we noticed there were alot of local Omani’s showing up at the beach …

_MG_3077-1 _MG_3083-1 _MG_3084-1 _MG_3091-1Between us we had discussed what the fishermen were going to do with the fish and it became apparent that the locals were coming down to the beach to buy fish straight from the Ocean … We stood there and watched before deciding to go down there and check it out and see what fish they had caught …

_MG_3095-1I was more interested in what they were doing and how they were dividing up the fish … and it was great to watch their process … and fish they caught were massive … we thought they would be quite small but they were huge … and it had taken about an hour in total to pull in the net …

_MG_3100-1 _MG_3110-1 _MG_3111-1 _MG_3119-1This kid was incredibly happy with his Squid that he found among the fish …

_MG_3149-1 _MG_3146-1

Because Perry had helped them out we were gifted 3 of the fish for his help … which was a bonus … as it turns out a bunch of the locals come together on a Friday morning to catch some fish … they each take a cut of the catch and then the rest is sold to the locals who come down to the beach …

_MG_3142-1 _MG_3164-1 _MG_3167-1 _MG_3169-1As it turns out the breed that we had caught is called a ‘Long Faced Emperor Fish’ … I figured this out by looking at the pictures of the fish at our local supermarket a few days after … Ian having gone trout fishing alot previously gutted the fish … while Sarah descaled them … Perry took them down to the sea to clean off the sand … and I stood there rather unhelpfully taking pictures of the whole thing …

_MG_3171-1 _MG_3172-1 _MG_3184-1

Knowing that the fish wouldn’t last till we got home the next day we decided to BBQ them that evening and stopped at a supermarket along the way to the Dhows to get some ingredients to season them with …

Stay tuned for the next post to see how the rest of the trip went …

Till next time …

  1. This is incredibly thoughtful for a blessing unknown to me Mina X and Perry. The beauty awakens my ancestral (could be my word) linage to dreams of future pasts. Imagine my bloodline smiling because I saw their footprint in the sand, Thank you for this – Peace be Unto You.
