Oman Road Trip … Day 3 … The Nomad Guesthouse & Muttrah Souk …

This is Part 3 of our trip to Oman … you can read PART 1 and PART 2 by following the links …

Our final day at the Shangri-La was rather uneventful … we woke up late, had breakfast (ended up having the same stuff we had the day before – it was very good) … and relaxed in our room … on the terrace and generally just being lazy … dozing in bed etc … it was abit overcast that morning so we chose not to go down to the pool … and after having organised a late checkout … I made the most of the big bed by dozing the morning away with the TV on for some background noise …

It was actually great not having to think about having to do anything or go anywhere for a while … we ended up ordering room service for lunch and ate on the balcony/terrace and finished packing up our stuff before we left to checkout …

_MG_5742-1 _MG_5750-1 _MG_5753-1On our way back toward Muscat and on to the Nomad Guesthouse … where we were staying for the next couple nights … we made our way through long and windy mountain roads … along tree lined roads and beautiful flower beds … we had’t really paid much attention to Muscat itself when we first got here … it had been early morning … we were tired and just wanted to find the hotel … so got lost in the process of trying to navigate an unfamiliar city …

_MG_5755-1 _MG_5759-1 _MG_5762-1 _MG_5763-1This time we really had a chance to take a look around us and Muscat really is a beautiful place … fair enough its still a city and with all the construction and road works going on its not always the most picturesque either … but the old parts of Muscat and along the corniche is really beautiful … the whole place reminded us abit of Guernsey … there appeared to be alot of european influences around …

We finally made our way to the Guesthouse, checked in all ok … the staff at the guesthouse are really friendly and welcoming … they even gave us an idea of things we could do around town that afternoon …

_MG_5766-1 _MG_5769-1 _MG_5771-1I was quite impressed with the choice of reading material on offer in our room …

_MG_5774-1 _MG_5776-1Before we headed out though I had to check out their rooftop terrace area abit … its amazingly quirky … full of plants and bits of furniture to perch on … and even a BBQ … if we had been staying longer I’m sure we would have made more use of it …

_MG_5792-1 _MG_5805-1 _MG_5803-1 _MG_5808-1 _MG_5807-1 _MG_5810-1 _MG_5811-1Anyways after freshening up we headed back out and on to Muttrah Souk and Corniche area for a wander …

_MG_5813-1 _MG_5819-1Driving past the Main Mosque on our way …

_MG_5824-1 _MG_5827-1 _MG_5829-1 _MG_5833-1 _MG_5834-1 _MG_5838-1We spent a fair amount of time randomly wandering around the Souk and checking out the many stalls … most catering to tourists … which is to be expected … One thing whihc became really apparent in our walking around the Souk and we had noticed abit at the Shangri-la … was that people (shop owners/waiters/etc) tended to address me first, and ask me first about things … this was abit odd for us as I had gotten used to being ignored somewhat in Dubai when I am out with perry as he tends to be addressed first in most places …

_MG_5846-1 _MG_5847-1 _MG_5851-1 _MG_5853-1 _MG_5854-1 _MG_5861-1As we decided to start making our way back to the waterfront we ended up in the back streets behind the Souk and enjoyed just wandering around … the weather was great and everyone was really rather friendly …

_MG_5856-1 _MG_5858-1 _MG_5859-1 _MG_5862-1 _MG_5864-1We stopped at a little cafe along the waterfront and sat down for a couple milkshakes and some Humous before we headed back to the Guest house …

_MG_5868-1 _MG_5870-1 _MG_5871-1We had an early start the next morning with a Boat trip we’d organised … But we did drive back the long way round and drove through the old part of the city … its incredibly charming all lit up at night …

Stay tunned for the next post about our boat trip …

Till next time …
