Thursday’s Weekly Roundup … Oman Planning & UAE Construction …

Hello everyone … we’ve had a relatively busy week … last weekend was quite packed with stuff and Perry has been working late a few nights this week which has just made our evenings feel that much shorter … ah well its nearly the weekend now and I’m really looking forward to our weekend away …

Starting off with a brief recap of what we got up to last weekend … Thursday evening we went over to Marina mall to see a film and just had a quiet night … Friday morning we met up with Brian at the Yacht Club for breakfast before we all headed over together to the Jumeira Golf Course for the DP World Championship … it was a lovely day out with great weather … the afternoon was better with more shade around and a cool breeze …

Saturday morning we had another breakfast date with our friends Stef and Bas at their home … where Perry and I got to meet their adorable twin girls Mina and Franka for the first time … they are just one month old and so incredibly cute … of course I couldn’t resist taking A FEW pictures of them while we were there too … will have to arrange to go back one day and do a proper session with them soon …

Later that day Perry and I both had Dr’s appointments for different reasons … he needed more cream for his eczema while I had started getting these recurring headaches … by the time we were done with the Dr’s though neither of us were really feeling up for going back to the Golf for the afternoon and instead had a quiet afternoon at home … playing with the kittens and getting on with some chores (as boring as that may be) …

(Morning sunrise while at the petrol station on the way to work … )

Sunday we were both back at work … after a month of not having to work Sunday’s it was an odd feeling … I’m not sure I liked it … it was like my body was rejecting this whole ‘going to work’ thing … anyways … it wasn’t so bad … but the roads were terrible that morning … the number of crazy drivers were much higher than we usually have to contend with and a stressful highly strung drive to work is not what I needed to start off the week!

Wednesday I had the car as Perry had organised a lift to work with someone else that day … so was driving myself home for the first time in a while … driving home is actually alot more stressful than in the mornings … everything is dark so its that much harder to notice things … and for some reason the number of stupid idiots increases exponentially … on top of that there always seem to be more traffic jams on the way home too … I in fact got stuck in one pretty horrid one for over 20mins on my way home … which was not fun … just being sat in 4 lanes of crawling traffic … I’d had a rough day with my allergies being particularly harsh and all I wanted was to go home and rest … on top of all that there were the impatient drivers who just couldn’t wait in the traffic … no they decided it would be best to overtake using the hard shoulder next to the central reservation … I counted about 14 cars doing this … not really all that safe either …

(example of one idiot driver overtaking in the hard shoulder lane)

Slightly off topic but there has been alot going on in the news this week about new developments and mega construction projects kicking off in Dubai lately …

At the start of the week they announced the construction of a new city within Dubai … the Mohammed Bin Rashid City … due to contain over 100 new hotels, a park 30% larger than London’s Hyde Park, world class exhibition, arts and cultural facilities, a Universal Studios theme park, as well as the largest shopping mall in the world (as if Dubai Mall wasn’t big enough already) … sounds pretty epic … and when you look at the map of where it’s going to be (see below) … it stretches from Sheikh Zayed road all the way across Al Khail and Emirates road … completely encompassing the area from Downtown Dubai (Burj Khalifa) in the North to Arabian Ranches (residential villas) in the South …

They have also announced the construction of a 10 Billion Dirham complex in Jebel Ali (South end of Dubai) with five distinct theme parks … one will be the Dubai Adventure Studios – set to host Hollywood brands with a range of rides and activities for all ages … Bollywood Parks – focuses mainly on the huge appeal of Indian Cinema, which will also include a theatre to stage Broadway style musicals … a Water and Marine Life Park – showcasing aquatic life, animal encounters and live shows as well as rides/attractions … A theme park aimed at Preschoolers, toddlers and Primary school children … and finally a Night Safari aimed at highlighting the Arabian Desert … Apparently the first phase of this is to be completed by 2014 … better get to it!

Finally … the last major project that has been announced this week is in Abu Dhabi … or actually outside of the city in the middle of the desert … the Bulgarian artist Christo, wants to build a 500ft tall flat topped pyramid … the result would be the world’s largest (and most expensive) permanent sculpture (bigger than the pyramid of Giza!!!) … it will be known as ‘The Mastaba’, and is to be made up of 410,000 multicoloured oil barrels planted in a desert landscape approx 100miles from Abu Dhabi City …

In some other news … there have been some developments over the last couple months which I have not really been able to talk about on here until now … basically Perry officially handed in his notice to his company and will be changing jobs in about 3 weeks time … he actually handed in his notice a couple weeks ago but we were waiting till everything was formalised and confirmed before telling everyone about it … most people we see and speak to over here as well as our families back home already know about this latest development …

(what my current project looks like … a giant whole in the ground with piles of sand and stones strewn around the place …)

This weekend we are off to Oman for 5 days … we will be trying to leave early morning on Friday … for the trip … it’s about a 4-5hr drive from Dubai to Muscat and we want to get a head start getting to the border … as it’s a long weekend due to National Day it is expected that the borders are going to be quite busy … hopefully the early start will mean we can avoid some of the traffic at the border … I’ve booked us into a room at the Shangri La – Al Husn hotel for the first two nights … the resort is meant to be gorgeous and the photos online look amazing … so we are both really looking forward to just relaxing and not doing much for the first couple days … then for the next 2 nights I’ve booked us into a cosy little B&B closer to the centre of Muscat itself … and organised to do a Dolphin watching/snorkelling boat trip too (weather permitting) …

For the first time I haven’t really planned our trip too much … we have a vague idea of a few places we’d like to go and visit (the old town/souks/mosque/forts/etc) but no real plan of action to do these things … we’re just going to take it easy … we both need a good break to rest and recharge our batteries abit after the busy few months we’ve had … and for Perry especially going into a new job soon …

That is pretty much it for this week … hope you’ve all had a good week … oh and I managed to pick up the Aquaventure disposable pictures so I’ve lined up a post about that for tomorrow … so be sure to check back … 🙂

Till next time …

Mina X
