Hair For Hope …

Hello everyone … so this weekend I did something that I’d been wanting to do for a while now … I cut my hair short for charity … Beautiful Lengths in the USA takes hair donations and puts them towards making real hair wigs for women suffering from cancer … as I mentioned it’s something that I have thought about doing before but never had the right opportunity to do it …

A few weeks ago I saw this ARTICLE in the local news … about a local charity in Dubai organising a “Hair For Hope” event for woman to come along and donate their hair … so I rang up and booked an appointment to go in … this Saturday just gone was the day of my haircut … I was really quite nervous about it and had only told a hand ful of people before hand incase I chickened out …

I’ve never been much of a girly girl … only really started to wear dresses regularly 3-4years ago and still dont wear makeup regularly … but my hair has really been the only thing I’ve ever been particularly precious about … Bear in mind its been over 15 years since I last had short hair (in my books shoulder length and less is short) … I’ve spent my whole adult life with long hair … its been such an integral part of me I wasn’t even sure if short hair would suit me … I have really frizzy sometimes untamable hair … and the extra maintenance required with short hair that I wont be able to just tie back into a bun and forget about was abit daunting …

I don’t even like going to the hairdressers (last 3 years I have had my hair cut at home) … I get my hair cut once a year … reluctantly at that … to get rid of the dead ends … every year I promise myself I’ll get my hair cut more frequently but never do …

First the before shots … my hair was actually longer in August but had about 5inches of dead-ends trimmed before our Garden Wedding Party …

The Salon at DIFC … I donated a total of 9-13 inches of hair … the minimum donation required was 8inches …

Straight after the snip … Perry wasn’t allowed into the Ladies only salon so had to make do with taking a few snaps on my phone …

And after it was all done … with the hair I had chopped off …

Honestly though I was left with more hair than I had anticipated … I thought it would be an inch or more shorter at the end but my hair turned out to be longer than I’d anticipated …

Hugo was being extra playful and seeking attention that morning …

We also got to DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) an hour early for my appointment so Perry and I went for abit of a wander around the area before my slot …

I’m still getting used to having short hair … its just long enough to clip back but the fringy bit keeps getting my way while I’m working … it’ll take some adjustments before I’m completely comfortable with it … but I’m looking forward to trying new things with my shorter hair … and I am really glad I did it too …

I think Perry’s biggest worry about me doing this was that I would hate the outcome and just be in tears over it for ages … (it has happened before after a haircut so he had every right to be worried about it) … but I really like it … I think the change will be good for me too!

The event it turns out was a big success … 625 Inches of hair was donated in total … over 16meters of hair … and the youngest donation came from a 4yr old girl who gave 10inches … amazing!

Anyway thats it for this post … thanks for tuning in …

Till next time …

Mina X
