Weekly Roundup … ‘The Fog’ & Accidents Enroute To Abu Dhabi …

This week has been slightly less exciting/busy compared to last week … but I’m actually really glad about that … been feeling really tired lately and not sleeping too well … its making me grumpy in the evenings … I’ve been going to sleep alot earlier than usual most nights … although this should help it’s really not … and I keep feeling like I’m about to catch a cold or something … really dont want to be sick now the weather is getting better …

We finally got our car this week … you can see a couple pictures of it HERE … I’m starting to get used to it … but it is a very different drive to the Jag … the pedals aren’t responsive in the same way so my driving is a bit jolty while I get used to it … ironically its actually easier to drive if you go fast as its smoother … but I think that’s more to do with me having to get used to the pedals a bit more …

This week has seen the decent of ‘The Fog’ … it happens about twice a year in the UAE and generally marks the transition of the seasons from Summer to Winter and Winter to Summer (note: there appears to be no such thing as Autumn and Spring in this country) … and with the period of ‘The Fog’ (usually about a week or two) comes a sudden change in weather … at this time of the year the humidity drops significantly and the temperatures outside become more manageable … although during ‘The Fog’ it can get quite treacherous on the roads … visibility can be quite poor and combined with the reckless driving its even more dangerous than usual …

Nothing made this more apparent that on Wednesday morning … as I had a few meetings in Abu Dhabi that morning Perry and I decided to try doing the commute together that day … We decided I would do the drive to my site as Perry would then have to drive to his and home later in the evening (I was coming back to Dubai in the afternoon with a co-worker) … as we set off we could see the fog was quite thick … but as we got going it became apparent that it wasn’t clearing up anytime soon …

We had small patches where the fog wasn’t too bad … but alot of the time it was so dense that it was practically impossible to see anything more than 20-30ft in front of you … there were times I couldn’t even see the car in front even with their lights on … with all this poor visibility you still had the idiot drivers who’d drive right up close to your rear bumper … and would over/undertake with no regard for indicating or looking at where they are going …

We came across three separate accidents on our way down … the first involved 3 cars and happened right in front of us … we didn’t see the actual accident due to the ridiculously thick fog … but it could only have been a few cars ahead … as we drove past the driver of one was just getting out of his beat up car … green transmission fluid was leaking out of another car … while the third was smashed in from both ends … we got past this one quickly as it had just happened …

As we got about halfway along we came across a massive traffic jam … the cars had all slowed to a snails pace for miles and as we got closer we saw another accident on the side of the motorway involving a couple of cars … most of this one had already been moved to the side of the road … but the remenants of the broken windows and car parts were strewn across the lanes …

The final accident we came across was not even 1km away from the previous one … this one looked more serious with paramedics in attendance … it involved 2 busses that had been carrying labourers from Dubai to Abu Dhabi … most of the men from the busses were left standing on the side of the motorway while the emergency services dealt with the crash …

Once we were past this last one though we got going pretty quickly … by the time we got to my site I was about 45mins late and Perry ended up being over an hour late when he finally got to work … as it turned out my trip to Abu Dhabi turned out to be a bit of a wasted trip … our generator for the site office was broken and we ended up having a couple of meetings in the Starbucks at the nearby mall … while the main meeting I was in Abu Dhabi for ended up getting cancelled … Typical!

At least the drive back to Dubai was less eventful …

There are no photos from this rather disasterous drive as a) I was the one driving … b) I left my phone at home … and c) Perry was busy playing about with getting the Bluetooth/radio/etc on the car set up and generally chatting/checking directions to take photos … (the photos were from the fog this morning … not quite as dense as yesterday)!

Perry and I are going out for some dinner this evening … otherwise our weekend isn’t really going to be too exciting … we need to go finalise the registration of the car … hoepfully we can sort this on Saturday … and I have a list of chores and things to get sorted before our first guests arrive in 10 days time … fun times … plus I’ve been planning alot of fun things to do with our Family and Friends who are coming over …

Oh and my mum has finally booked her flights for Christmas … (this actually happened a couple weeks ago but forgot to mention it) … my dad and brother will hopefully decide by the end of the month when they can come out … Perry and I have plenty of days booked off between now and the new year so were both looking forward to having the time to spend with our visitors …
