Thursday’s Weekly Roundup – Cars, Flowers & Food …

Hello all … its been a good and bad few days over here … good for many reasons … and bad for all the drama thats come to be associated with buying and selling cars in the UAE … especially when your bank gets involved … DRAMA … anyway more about that in a bit … first the good stuff …

Last weekend we went to Gitex Shopper 2012 … you can read about the slightly traumatic experience HERE

Sunday we celebrated the 1 year anniversary of our move to Dubai … we decided to go out for dinner just the two of us … to celebrate … not making too big a deal of it … although as we walked out the building on our way to the restaurant I noticed that Perry and I had actually decided to wear the same colour clothes … he in a blue polo shirt and my dress was exactly the same shade … totally unintentional but we were already too far on our way to turn round and change … I think this is probably the main reason there isn’t a picture of the two of us from this evening … 😛

The kitchen at Rosso’s …

The biggest Calzone known to man! … but soo good …

Perry and his Diavola pizza …

While I was at work on Sunday I got a call from a courier service saying he had a package for me but was at my home address … so I asked him to leave it with the receptionist and that I would pick it up later on my way home … didnt think much of it the rest of the day … assuming it was something I’d ordered or a letter … anyway so I got home and with both arms full of groceries … I stopped by the reception desk to pick up the letter … only to be presented with a massive vase of flowers, a bouquet of fruit … and a box of chocolates … completely side swiped by this I explained to the guy at reception I was going to go up and put the shopping away and come back down to get them …

When I went back I still had to get the receptionist to help me carry everything up to the apartment … there was just so much stuff! … once settled I found the card on the bunch of flowers and turns out it was from my family … wishing us a Happy 1st Year in Dubai … totally unexpected … but wonderful too … it was great …

After dinner we headed back home and demolished half the fruit bouquet … and ate the rest over the next couple days … the Chocolates didnt last that long either … and flowers are sitting on the breakfast bar in our kitchen … the kittens are too interested in them so cant leave them on the coffee table … Hugo would eat them!

Saturday morning Perry had the pleasure of going through the hassle of officially selling the Jag … this involved a trip to the bank to sign some papers and then off to the RTA (Road and Transport Authority) offices to officially transfer ownership and registration of the car to the new owner … the car also goes through a mini MOT at this point and any outstanding fines/speeding tickets have to be settled then too … on paper it should all be simple and straight forward … in reality its a bunch of form filling and queing at one desk after another …

In anticipation of the stress that would involve I opted to stay home and let Perry … who has infinitely more patience than me for these things … go deal with this … (also the car is registered in his name so me going wouldn’t be of any help) … turns out it was all a big faff … and took close to 4ish hours to sort out!!! … In the meantime I stayed at home and made Taachin … a yummy Iranian dish which is basically a massive savoury sponge cake … but with rice in place of sponge and chicken in place of the jam/icing in the middle … its very good … and its one of Perry’s favourite Iranian dishes … simple yet tasty …

Trying to sort out our finances after selling the Jag and in trying to get the Golf has proven to be alot of hassle … especially as the bank has to get invovled … its a very long and twisted story as to what goes into what account which I’m not going to go into detail about … suffice to say I was waiting for some funds to clear in my account so that we could pay the owner of the Golf for the car …

Our Relationship Manager at HSBC seems to be a nice enough guy who also seems to know what he is talking about … so all necessary paperwork had been signed and sorted by Monday morning … so as all this was going through my account I was dealing with his guy directly … he rang me to tell me everything was going through fine and should all be cleared by Tuesday evening …

Tuesday evening rolled round and it still wasnt sorted … I couldn’t get hold of him anymore and so contacted him again first thing on Wednesday morning … he explained it was in a queue and waiting to be cleared … promised it would be done in the morning … it got to 11am and still nothing … so I rang him again … this time he said it would take until the afternoon possibly Thursday morning … (now bear in mind we are supposed to finalise payment on the Golf Wednesday evening) …

At this point I got really angry … but as I was in the middle of the office I held it together … I wasn’t rude but made my point very clear … and explained that I was very upset with this … that he had repeatedly made promises that he has not kept … that he has pretty much lied to me the whole time … and basically that I was not impressed by his handling of the situation … he said he would follow it up and get back to me …

Needless to say he didnt get back to me … I tried to call him again a couple hours later and he didnt pick up any of my calls … only to later get a message from Perry to say that he had rung him to apologise for what happened … there had been an error from the bank’s side which caused the delay and promised to have it sorted by Wednesday afternoon … now I’m not entirely sure why he didn’t ring me back directly to tell me this … but after I’d had a go at him about lying to me … Perry thought he was scared of me and felt it was safest to call him … actually this was probably true …

Anyway it all finally got sorted earlier this morning … took much longer than it should have and was such a hassle to organise … dealing with the banks here is just impossible sometimes … although it should mean we can get the car soon … were hoping Saturday!

While I’m not yet having to go to Abu Dhabi full time, I have had to make a couple trips down to site for meetings this week … I’m not looking forward to it becoming full time thats for sure … but I’m hoping there will be an element of routine that develops with the journey so it wont be too tedious … (I’m probably clutching at straws on that one) … but getting to spend an extra couple hours with Perry each day is the silver lining to this rather dark and ominous cloud looming over me …

Waiting to be picked up in the morning … (due to lack of Car) … I get to watch the sunrise!

Our site offices and parking area … in a bid not to be late … we left too early … and got there before the cabins were unlocked … thankfully it was still only 7.30am and not too hot yet …

As for this weekend … well I have a surprise lunch & dinner planned for Friday … and all I mean by surprise is that Perry has no idea about what I’ll be making … all I will say is I’m making it all from scratch … and if it works out I’ll let you all know about it … and if it doesn’t … well it shall never be spoken of again and we will pretend I didn’t even mention it here in the first place … 😛

Saturday we have organised for some specialist cleaners to come round and clean our AC units … we have three in our flat and as far as we know they have never been serviced or cleaned … the apartment is just under 3yrs old, and we’ve been here for nearly a year … no one has come round to give them a service so we are assuming it hasnt been done since the place was finished …

Anyway this company came round last weekend and inspected our units and gave us a report (with photos) explaining the state of them … it was distgusting … its no wonder I have allergies … the amount of mould and grime and nastiness that has accumilated up there is horrific … they do a thorough job of cleaning the whole unit, the ducts, the ceilings, even mop down all the floors after and do a final anti-mould fungal fumigation thing of the whole flat at the end …

I can’t wait! … I’ve booked the kittens in for a trip to the vet on Saturday afternoon for a check up … so we will be out of the flat for the fumigation part (we cant be there for that – obviously) … and hopefully we will come back to an apartment that is mould free … I’m also hoping this will help with my allergies … we also have alot of family and friends coming to visit us over the next few months and we really don’t want to be making anyone else ill …

Once we get the final report I will be sure to let you all see the difference it made … It promises to be immense!

Ok well that will be it for this week … have you got anything intersting lined up for your weekend?

Till next time …

Mina X

P.S. I never thought I would be so excited about having AC units cleaned …
