Thailand … Koh Samui …

Hey Everyone … Welcome to another update on our travels around Thailand … this post is about our days spent in Koh Samui and our flights to and from the island … ūüôā

We had a lovely relaxed start to our final morning in Chiang Mai (Tuesday 20th March) … and had a leisurely breakfast before finishing our packing¬†and checking out of our villa … we got to the airport and had checked in with what we thought was¬†plenty of time … it was 11.15am and our flight wasn‚Äôt till 12.45pm … or so we thought … it turns¬†out we had managed to get our flights confused … our flight was leaving at 12pm and landing at¬†1.45pm … so somewhere along the way the time 12.45 had gotten stuck in our heads … anyway¬†after a mild moment of panic we realised we were ok and headed off to security and to find our¬†gate …

As we headed through security … Perry the seasoned traveller … who really ought to have known¬†better … clearly didn‚Äôt have his head screwed on properly that morning as he had packed the¬†mosquito spray, sun tan lotion and his pen knife into his hand luggage … the triple whammy of¬†aerosol, liquid and sharp object not allowed on planes in carry-on baggage … thankfully the security¬†staff let him back out and he managed to get them into our checked luggage and made it back in¬†time to board the plane …

The flight itself was pretty uneventful … we had some minor turbulence but other than that it was¬†pretty standard as far as a plane journey goes …

After getting our bags and having waited for 20mins we rang the hotel and there had been some¬†mix up with their system and they hadn‚Äôt registered our request for a pickup from the airport … they¬†then sent someone out to collect us and we eventually got to the hotel … once there and all checked¬†in we were shown to our room …

At first we were disappointed by the room we were initially shown to as it was not quite what¬†had been advertised by their website … particularly to do with the view that we had … the room was¬†right above reception and there was a rather large transformer station with a bajillion cables coming¬†out of it right infront of us obscuring what would have been a lovely view …

So after kicking up a bit of a fuss with the hotel manager … explaining how we felt about it … and there¬†were a number of other things wrong with the room … he arranged to move us to a different room¬†higher up which had an unobstructed view and didn‚Äôt have the other issues with it either …

We were also offered a complementary dinner at the hotel restaurant to make up for the mistake¬†regarding the pickup and the whole situation with the room … we made a reservation for the¬†evening and decided to spend what was left of our afternoon relaxing in the Jacuzzi on the¬†balcony …

Dinner later was quite good and the views from their were lovely aswell … we were sat there¬†watching the planes take off and land at the airport in the distance … surprisingly busy for such a¬†small island … the food itself wasn‚Äôt too bad … but after Chiang Mai we had been spoilt and the meal¬†was not quite to the same standard as Noi‚Äôs … but the chocolate fondant dessert was delicious …

On our second and only full day in Koh Samui we got married in a small ceremony on the beach … had a great and lovely relaxed day … you can read about this and see the pictures in our previous post here.

On our final day here we woke up later than usual and after lazing around for a while we went and had breakfast¬†and lounged around the pool for a couple hours … we had arranged for a late checkout today and as¬†we had an afternoon flight to Bangkok we headed back to our room to just relax .. pack our bags …¬†generally not do much … enjoy the sunshine on our balcony … and as we still had the table and¬†chairs from our dinner the previous night we decided to order pizza from room service for lunch …

As we could get access to the airport lounge we decided to leave abit earlier … we got dropped¬†off, checked in our bags and headed off in search of the airport lounge … it was small but neatly¬†decorated and has computers, food and drink … which in reality is all you need when your waiting¬†for your flight …

Overall we enjoyed our time in Koh Samui, the people were lovely and we generally had a good¬†time … our wedding day was an exceptionally relaxed day … the only thing that bothered us was¬†the hotel appeared to put across its services in a particular way online which ended up not being¬†completely in-line with the reality once we got there … it felt like we had in some ways been¬†deceived … each incident on its own was not a big deal and could have been forgiven but it was¬†a number of these little insignificances that added up to this little niggling feeling that left a bad¬†impression on us …

As lovely as the hotel, facilities, views, etc were … the experience was slightly dampened by the¬†extortionate transportation costs we had to pay whenever we wanted to go anywhere … being up in¬†the mountain the hotel had agreed rates with a taxi company and cause its not walking distance to a¬†main road you are pretty much at their mercy in this regard … and you have to pay what they ask or¬†else you were stuck at the hotel … it was not the sort of thing we had expected and so far we had a¬†great experience at our last hotel and felt really taken care of there … whereas here we came away¬†feeling slightly taken advantage of …

Overall we had a good time of it and enjoyed spending it with each other … and at the end of the¬†day that was all that had mattered … we were only here for a couple days so in the end these little¬†things were not enough to ruin our trip … but had we been staying longer I am sure we would have¬†gone to a different hotel …

Anyways so we finally boarded our flight to Bangkok on a much smaller propeller plane … alot more¬†colourful than our previous planes too … the flight was pretty entertaining as Perry had downloaded¬†the new Angry Birds Space game on the iPad which kept me occupied for the duration of the flight …

We managed to make our way out of the airport pretty quickly once we arrived, hopped into a cab¬†and headed off to the Viva Garden Hotel in the Sukumvit area of Bangkok … the hotel was actually¬†a series of serviced apartments … and the building and rooms are all pretty much brand new … the¬†hotel has only been opened recently and on closer inspection it appeared as if we were the first¬†people staying in our particular room …

After a quick freshen up and a change of clothes we turned around pretty quickly and headed back¬†out for the evening … Perry had arranged to meet up with one of his Rally friends Keith (from the¬†Mongol Rally he did back in 2009) and his girlfriend, Ogi, who were currently living in Bangkok … so¬†we set off to go meet them …

We ended up going for a Korean BBQ not too far from where our hotel was … and then moved on¬†to a little side street bar for some beers and a good chat … it was a great evening overall and I had a¬†great time getting to know Keith and Ogi … both of whom I‚Äôd met for the first time that evening …

After a few beers Perry and I decided to call it a night … we had to get up early again in the morning¬†as we had arranged a local tour guide to show us around Bangkok for the day … so we said our¬†goodbyes and hopped into a taxi back to our hotel …

Thats it for this post … but we have one more lined up about our final day in Thailand and our tour around Bangkok …

So stay tuned …

Till next time …
