Now Everyone Meet Derek …

Hello again everyone … finally after waiting an extra 7 days for him to recover from ‘Kitty Flu’ we can now introduce you to the second newest member of our family … little Derek … or rather should I say big Derek … Since we first saw him 2 weeks ago Derek has put on more weight and is even larger than Hugo now … which is a big change cause he did look like he may have been the runt of the litter initially …  anyways after a final health check and a sign off from the vet we were able to bring him home on Tuesday evening.Ok so to start with here are some basic facts about Derek …

  • Derek weighed 1.05kg when we brought him home
  • He has a much darker colouring than Hugo, on first look it appears that he has black fur but there are some distinct lighter patches on his underside, some tinges of brown in his coat and even some faint hints of some stripes … but more often than not in photos he appears black.
  • His birthday is also 1st December 2011 making him and Hugo 13 weeks old today
  • He loves to jump around
  • He loves the water fountain that we bought them (Hugo was wary at first) and took to like a duck to water … having heard that running water is better for them as it doesn’t go stale we thought it a better option than leaving the tap on all day
  • He is not as graceful with his climbing as Hugo is … but we soon figured out this may be because the vet had trimmed his claws which are alot more blunt than Hugo’s meaning he has trouble gripping onto things … as such we’ve moved the cardboard box to the base of the bed so he can get up easier.
  • He is alot more wary and skittish than Hugo was when we brought him home … and is still not comfortable with us picking him up or stroking him very often
  • He likes to sleep on top of the travel crate
  • He startles at sudden movement or loud sounds and likes to hide behind the bed
  • He is incredibly fast … while Hugo is stealthier Derek has the speed!
  • He is a proper greedy guts and enjoys his food
  • He also has us both wrapped around his little paws …

We were so excited to get him home and to reintroduce him to Hugo … I was feeling increasingly guilty about leaving Hugo every day when we left for work … he seemed to be giving me this rather sad look in the mornings imploring me to stay and play with him … it has has made me contemplate calling in sick every morning for the last week! … now with both of them together I don’t feel so guilty knowing they have each other for company throughout the day …

With Derek having been ill when he first got to Dubai he seems to have had a more traumatic time in the two weeks since getting here than Hugo … he has been back and forth between the vet and the cattery a number of times and hasn’t really been anywhere long enough to settle … and I don’t imagine many of his interactions with humans so far have been overly loving (apart from the times we went to visit him) … so we were always expecting Derek to be more wary of his new surroundings and possibly take longer than Hugo to settle in …

Once we got Derek home we left him in the crate on the floor so he and Hugo could get reacquainted without risks of a fight breaking out … and in the mean time we changed the litter tray so it didn’t all smell of Hugo! … Once we could see that they were going to be ok and that they were both eager to play … we opened the cage to let him out … he was cautious at first and it was incredibly cute to watch Hugo go into the crate and usher Derek out … again it only took him a few minutes to scout out the bedroom and bathroom … we showed him where the litter tray was and then the fun began …

Hugo started jumping all over Derek so excited that he finally had someone to play with … and Derek at first seemed to be ok with it all … but it soon became apparent that Hugo was trying to establish his dominance as the first kitten in the flat (something which I had been trying to avoid by wanting to bring them home together but due to Derek being ill that wasn’t possible) … and at some points when we felt the play fighting was getting too rough or when Derek let off a rather terrifying yelp we would step in to separate them …

I was having flashbacks to all those times when my Mum would have to separate me and my brother when we were kids and our ‘play fighting’ turned into actual fighting … Lol …

But soon after they seemed to settle down and by the end of the evening they were happily playing, jumping up and down, swiping at each other and chasing each other around the room without any signs of distress from either kitten … so we were comforted by the fact that they were getting along ok …

We also started to notice that Derek was having trouble climbing onto the bed … and even if we put him onto the bed he quickly jumped off and scuttled off under it! … we initially thought this was cause he didn’t like to be high up … but that theory was soon put to rest when he rather clumsily made his way up the cat scratch post to the top level … we later discovered that his claws seemed to have been clipped and were quite blunt … which explains why he was having so much trouble climbing the bed and why he struggled trying to get up the cat post … we just pushed the cardboard box up to the end of the bed so he had a little step up to help him onto the bed whenever he felt ready to do so … and by the end of the next day he was happily getting up on the bed …

Throughout the evening it became clear that Derek was not going to warm up to us as quickly as Hugo had … which is ok … but we were just worried that we may have been doing something wrong … but after some Googling we found that we had been doing everything right … that he probably just needs more time due to having had a more traumatic experience with the whole relocation compared to Hugo … so we left him alone and decided to follow advice we had found trying to keep noise to a minimum, not to make any sudden movements and to not pick him up or stroke him unless he approaches us …

By the end of the night he was abit more confident being around us … but unless we were dangling a fishing pole with a toy on the end any movement at all from our part would cause him to dash off under the bed …  It was at this point that I was glad that Perry had taken a day off work on Wednesday to stay at home and keep an eye on them …

So in the morning I went off to work and Perry stayed at home to look after the kittens … as it turned out they were as good as gold … no more fighting between the brothers … just playful chasing and jumping around … and Derek decided the bed wasn’t all that bad after all … now that the box was in place he is more inclined to get up onto the bed … Perry even found a neat trick to get Derek to calm down and settle abit while he is held … all he does is pretends to make a licking sound with his mouth while rubbing his nose on Derek’s neck/back … it basically mimics the sensation of the mother cat’s licking so its comforting for them … it seemed to work too … although I have yet to perfect the technique myself!

By the time I got home in the evening Hugo was napping at the top of the Cat stand and Derek was stretched out at the end of the bed … I decided since they had finally woken up I’d try to get some pictures of them in the fading daylight … the lighting quality was quite poor by this time and the Kittens are so fast it was hard to get pictures of them in focus … but I got Perry to help me keep them distracted and managed to get some good pictures of Derek and Hugo playing together …

Soon the light got so bad the picture quality was becoming unbearably poor so I called it quits for that evening and figured I’d get some more over the weekend when we will be around during the day … So we spent the rest of the evening having dinner, sorting through photos and playing with the kittens some more …

Derek has definitely warmed up to us more since we brought him home but there is still away to go … he doesn’t run away so readily any more when we approach him (only if we try to pick him up) … and when I sat myself down on the bed with my computer next to him he barely moved … so I think with Derek its going to be a case of Baby steps … until we can gain his trust … I’m sure he will be as loving and affectionate as Hugo … he just needs some time …

Another thing I have noticed since we brought Derek home is that Hugo hasn’t slept on my pillow for the last couple nights … choosing to sleep on the cat stand or the window sill … and Derek seems to prefer napping on the end of the bed (if we’re not in/on it) or on top of the crate … so last night as we were getting ready for bed … both boys were asleep (cat stand and crate) … so we thought we’d finally get a good night’s rest … but as soon as we got under the covers we had Hugo bounding around our feet pouncing on our toes through the covers … this then woke up Derek and the two started chasing after each other around the room making an absolute racket …

So in desperation we decided to go sleep in the spare room for the night … leaving the kittens to run around as much as they wanted to expend their energies …

All in all I think they will be both be ok … Derek just needs abit more time to adjust than Hugo did … but in the end were sure they will both be happy kittens … and in a few more days (once Derek is more comfortable around us) we will introduce them to the rest of the flat and give them the full run of the place … for now we don’t want to overwhelm them with too much stimulation and space (particularly with Derek) …

Will keep you all posted on how things develop with the little cuties …

For now Perry and I have what looks to be a potentially hectic weekend coming up … nothing planned for certain but alot of ‘maybes’ are lining up … so it may be a busy one … hopefully there will be some time for relaxing in there too … we still need to plan our holiday to Thailand which is coming up in a few weeks …

Any ways … hope you all have a wonderful weekend …

Till next time …

  1. These kittens are both so cute!

We’re currently thinking of getting a second cat to keep our first company. We think she’d really appreciate it, but as she’s a bit older, I think it’ll be more difficult to do this.

Still, looking at these two playing together really makes me want to go out and start looking. Not that I don’t regularly check the RSPCA website as it is! 🙂

  2. I like Hugo’s yawning Pic. the best 🙂 and there is one of Derek that you can see his paws open! that’s a nice one too.
    Have a great week end.

  3. Enjoyed the update. Derek and Hugo are lucky kitties. Just please be careful with open windows and doors. I hope that your kitties will be indoor pets, as outdoors can shorten kitty lives. Hopefully they will not be boarded while you both are on holiday. Too soon. Look forward to updates. Happy March.

    • No worries about that … We live on the 20th floor so these kitties are going to be indoor cats for sure!!!

And we agree on the boarding aspect … Too stressful for cats let alone kittens … There is a very reputable pet sitting company here that we are going to be using and we will also have a friend who lives in the building pop over occasionally to check on them … They’ve been moved around enough … Don’t want to stress them out any more than they already have!

  4. So nice to meet Derek! I’m glad Hugo has his brother back, and it sounds like you guys are indeed doing all the right things. It cracked me up that you slept in the spare room and gave the kitties the run of the master bedroom.

  5. Happy to hear Derek is back with his brother and they’re enjoying their play time together. Both of them are so cute! ^_^

I’m quite impressed by Derek’s jumping skills. It looks really high for a kitten!
    Another lovely read =^.^=

  6. Yay! I’ve been checking back since you first posted about Hugo and Derek, he is just as cute! I think you’ve done the right thing, having two kitties to keep each other company, especially when both of you work. I’m sure Derek will be charging around and become more affectionate as time passes.

  7. Ha! I did tell you once the two got together there would be mad kitten romping 🙂 great posts of some adorably cute kitties. Looking forward to more updates and of course, more photos!

  8. I am loving the 3 photo slide of Derek! It’s like you have captured 3 parts of his personality. I can see a caption with all 3 photos.
    1. Gotta be sitting straight and tall 2. OH BRO!!! 3. Pfft, typical Hugo
They look like they are getting along quiet well.
Can’t wait to see more photos 🙂
