At The Top – The Burj Khalifa

Last night after work Perry and I headed over the the Dubai Mall to meet up with our visiting friends Tom & Claire to meet them for dinner and to go up to the observation deck of the Burj Khalifa …

View to the top of the Burj from the 124th Floor Observation Deck ...

Before I get into it … here are some of the 17 world records the Burj currently holds … which include:

  • The Tallest Building in the World at 829.84m,
  • The Worlds Highest Display of New Years Fireworks,
  • The Worlds Highest NIghtclub on the 144th Floor,
  • Worlds Highest outdoor Observation deck on the 124th Floor,
  • Worlds Fastest Elevators at 64km/h or 18m/s, and
  • Highest Vertical Pumping for a building at 606m … to name just a few

Ok back to the point … so after some yummy dinner at one of the mall restuarants we headed down to the ticket counter to collect our tickets and then we milled around browsing the shops until it got to our timed slot to go up …

View of the Skyscrapers along Sheikh Zayed road

After much walking (on travelators – there is a serious aversion to actual walking in Dubai) we made it to the lifts … by which point Tom, who as it turns out has a serious fear of heights (it makes you wonder why he even came to Dubai, the city of skyscrapers and why he even wanted to go up here in the first place) was starting to panic abit …

Tom & Claire

Soon we were in the lift and other than the feeling of our ears popping on the way up it really didnt feel like we were moving at all … let alone at 64km/h … but I will take the websites word for it that we were actually moving that fast …

More of the Views and one of Perry and me!

Anyways so once up there we took a wander round the observation deck to take in the views of the city … it looked great all lit up from above … and considering we were on the 124th floor we were only about halfway up the building …

Toms death grip on the handle bar ...

Safely viewing from the indoors ...

We went to the outdoor observation deck which was rather windy and actually quite cold … I was glad I had my scarf with me … but the best part was just watching Tom freak out if one of us started leaning on the glass … he had this constant death grip on the banisters and was quite easily startled … and as mean as this may sound it was funny to see …

Even when indoors Tom refused to get too close to the glass ...

I somehow … in a move that is incredibly unlike me … managed to forget to pack my camera into my handbag before leaving for work in the morning (I’m going to blame the fact that I woke up late and was rushing around to get ready) … so all my pictures from the top were taken on my iPhone … so appologies for the crappy quality of the images … As good as the iPhone camera is … its still not too great at taking pictures in low light conditions … Either way I will be back again with camera in tow and will hopefully get some even better pictures next time round …

Dubai Fountains from the Burj Observation deck ...

Anyways so after wandering around the top for ages and having watched the Dubai fountain show from that high up … which was fun in itself … we decided to head back down to try and catch the next show from ground level …

Tom & Claire with the Fountains ...

Having gotten distracted on the way down by the different displays about how the Burj was constructed and the people involved in it etc … we finally made our way outside in time to catch the Fountains performance …

Final big splash!

Following this we headed back to the car and home … by this point it was getting quite late (it was a work night afterall) and we were all lagging … Perry and I after a long day of work … Tom and Claire after a long hard day at the mall which involved Ice Skating and a trip to the Aquarium!

Enjoying the show ...

Thats it for now … stay tuned for an exciting update in the next couple days …

Till next time …
